Mid-level Software Engineer

🚀 We’re hiring a Mid-level Full Stack Engineer at Birl 🚀

At Birl, we’re building the future of returns for e-commerce. Our mission is simple: make returns effortless for shoppers, valuable for brands, and better for the planet.

We’re a small, ambitious startup tackling a problem that touches millions of online purchases every day. There’s a lot to build, plenty of unknowns, and huge opportunity ahead. If you enjoy ownership, moving fast, and figuring things out as you go, you’ll feel very at home here.

Now is a brilliant time to join as we scale our platform, deepen our integrations, and work towards becoming the go-to global returns solution 🌍♻️

The role

We’re looking for a Mid-level/weight Full Stack Software Engineer to join our small engineering team. You’ll work collaboratively in the tech team and the wider team to build and evolve Birl’s core product, from customer-facing returns flows to merchant dashboards and backend services.

This is a hands-on role with real ownership. You’ll help shape technical decisions, influence how we build, and ship things that customers actually use.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Designing, building and shipping features across the full stack, from user interfaces through to backend services and data layers.
  • Developing and maintaining scalable backend services and APIs in Node.js, with a strong focus on reliability, performance and security.
  • Contributing to high-quality customer and merchant experiences using React and Next.js.
  • Building and maintaining integrations with e-commerce platforms, particularly Shopify.
  • Working with GCP to deploy, monitor and scale systems in a production environment.
  • Taking ownership of features from early discovery and technical design through to launch, monitoring and iteration.
  • Contributing to sensible engineering practices, documentation and code quality as the team and codebase grow.

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong commercial experience working full stack with JavaScript, including React or Next.js and Node.js.
  • A genuine interest in backend engineering, with solid experience building APIs, integrations and production systems.
  • Experience working in e-commerce, including platform integrations such as Shopify.
  • Good technical judgement and the ability to make pragmatic decisions within an evolving architecture.
  • Comfortable working in a small, fast-moving team with ambiguity and changing priorities.
  • A proactive, delivery-focused mindset balanced with care for quality, testing and maintainability.
  • Someone who enjoys ownership and takes pride in seeing features through from idea to production.
  • Startup experience is a plus, but not essential if you thrive in fast-paced environments.

Why Birl?

  • High impact role with genuine ownership from day one.
  • Small team, no layers, and lots of influence.
  • Meaningful work at the intersection of e-commerce and sustainability.
  • Big ambition, fast learning, and plenty of room to grow with the company.
