Infrastructure & Security Engineer
IT Infrastructure & Security Engineer
Birmingham | Hybrid – 3 days per week in the office
£50,000–£55,000 + benefits | Permanent
We’re looking for an experienced IT Infrastructure & Security Engineer to join an established IT team in a role that combines infrastructure, security and governance.
This is a genuinely hands-on role, but we're looking for someone with SME-level seniority – someone who can take ownership, spot potential security and infrastructure risks before they become problems, and confidently advise the Head of IT without needing everything to be directed.
Security and governance are a particularly important part of the role. You’ll be expected to bring a proactive approach to information security, risk management, controls and compliance, with ISO 27001 experience highly advantageous.
There’s also a significant third-party element to the IT environment, so you'll be comfortable working with and managing external suppliers, understanding their services and holding them to account where necessary. Experience or understanding of Azure or AWS would be useful, although you don't need to be a cloud specialist.
What you'll be doing
- Taking ownership of infrastructure and security platforms, ensuring they remain secure, reliable and fit for purpose.
- Identifying and proactively addressing infrastructure, security and operational risks.
- Supporting vulnerability assessments, security testing and remediation activity.
- Managing and maintaining on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure and services.
- Supporting ISO 27001 controls, risk management and audit readiness.
- Managing identity and access controls, including privileged access and periodic access reviews.
- Overseeing patching, maintenance and technical remediation.
- Managing backup and recovery solutions, including restoration testing.
- Monitoring infrastructure performance, availability and resilience.
- Supporting incident response, service restoration and post-incident reviews.
- Delivering infrastructure improvements, technical changes and projects in line with appropriate governance and change controls.
- Acting as a technical point of contact for third-party IT suppliers and support providers.
- Maintaining clear technical documentation, procedures and knowledge articles.
- Deputising for the Head of IT on specific operational, technical or security matters when required.
- Continually looking for ways to improve the organisation's security posture, resilience and IT services.
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone with 5+ years' experience across infrastructure, systems administration, IT security or a similar environment, who has developed beyond purely operational support into a role where they can take ownership and provide trusted technical guidance.
You'll ideally have:
- Strong practical knowledge of IT infrastructure and information security.
- A good understanding of security controls, risk management and governance.
- Experience working with security vulnerabilities, remediation and access controls.
- ISO 27001 experience – highly desirable.
- Experience managing or working closely with third-party IT suppliers.
- Some exposure to Azure or AWS and an understanding of cloud infrastructure.
- Experience working within change management, governance and IT service management processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work independently, prioritise effectively and take ownership of outcomes.
- Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to explain technical and security matters to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A proactive approach to continuous improvement rather than simply responding to issues as they arise.
Relevant Microsoft, Azure, AWS, CompTIA, Cisco or cybersecurity qualifications would be advantageous, as would experience with scripting and automation.
The person
This role would suit an experienced infrastructure professional who has security and governance firmly on their radar and enjoys being the person others can rely on to keep things moving.
You'll need to be comfortable saying “I've spotted an issue here, and here's what I think we should do about it” rather than waiting for someone else to identify the problem.
In return, you'll have the opportunity to work closely with the Head of IT, take real ownership of infrastructure and security, and make a tangible contribution to the ongoing improvement of the IT environment.
