Head of Business Development
Head of Business Development
Boardman | Manchester or London | Full-time
Don't hire a CTO. Subscribe to one.
That's our pitch to scaling technology companies. We provide fractional CTO, CIO, CISO, and CAIO services, senior technology leadership without the £250k salary, the 12-month search, or the risk of getting it wrong.
We work with UK tech companies in the £8M-£30M revenue range. Post-Series A businesses preparing for their next raise. Bootstrapped companies growing fast but hitting technology ceilings. Founders who know they need strategic technology leadership but aren't ready for a full-time executive.
The model works. The delivery works. Now we need someone to build the pipeline.
The Role
You'll own business development from first conversation to signed contract.
That means building relationships with the professional advisors who already work with our ideal clients: PE operating partners, VC platform teams, corporate finance advisors, partners at growth-focused accountancy practices, technology lawyers. These people see technology leadership gaps before anyone else. When they trust you, they refer.
It also means running qualification and discovery with prospects, understanding their situation, and closing the deal when the fit is right.
This isn't about volume. We're not looking for someone to blast LinkedIn InMails, Instantly cod emails or run webinar funnels. We're looking for someone who builds genuine relationships, earns trust, and knows how to have strategic conversations with CEOs and founders about their technology challenges.
What You'll Do
Build an introducer network
The best clients come through warm introductions. You'll identify, approach, and build relationships with the professional advisors who serve scaling technology businesses—and who encounter the problems we solve.
Run the sales process
From first conversation through to close. Qualification, discovery, proposal, negotiation, signature. You'll own it.
Maintain pipeline and forecast
Keep the CRM current. Know what's closing this month, next month, next quarter. No surprises.
Who We're Looking For
You have existing relationships in our target channels.
PE operating partners. VC platform teams. Corporate finance advisors. Accountancy partners who work with growth businesses. If you can name specific people you'd call in your first month, we should talk.
You've sold strategic, considered purchases.
Not transactional sales. Not 18-month enterprise cycles. The sweet spot: 4-8 week decisions, £100k+ annual value, CEO or board-level buyers. Professional services, B2B SaaS, or advisory sales backgrounds tend to fit.
You understand how referral networks work.
You know that introducer relationships take time to build and compound over years. You're patient enough to invest in relationships and commercial enough to convert them to revenue.
You're based in Manchester or London.
This is a relationship business. You'll be in rooms with people.
What You Won't Find Here
A big brand to lean on. You're selling Boardman, not a household name. Your credibility comes from your own reputation and the quality of what we deliver.
A marketing team filling your calendar. We don't do lead magnets, paid advertising funnels, or SDR-driven outreach. You build your own pipeline through relationships.
A path to managing a sales team. This role might evolve, but right now it's about you selling, not building a team.
Compensation
Base salary £60,000-£80,000 depending on experience and network strength, plus commission on closed business. Equity discussion at 12 months if things are working.
The economics: Our minimum client engagement is £6,000/month. Typical engagements run £8,000-£15,000/month. Commission is structured so that success is meaningful.
How to Apply
Send a message or email with:
- A short note (not a cover letter) explaining why this interests you. No more than 300 words.
- Your CV.
- Three specific introducers you'd activate in your first 30 days. Names, firms, and your relationship with them. This is the most important part.
If you can't name specific people, this probably isn't the right role. No hard feelings, we're looking for someone whose network already overlaps with where we need to be.
