Head of Engineering

London / Edinburgh Hybrid

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Engineer / VP Engineering to lead our Powerdesk product group engineering organization. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of our software solutions, ensuring they meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.

Key Accountabilities:

• Managing the Principal engineers in Powerdesk engineering, ensuring alignment and common approaches/standards as required.
• Managing the operational costs of running the various Powerdesk products, and setting engineering direction to increase efficiency and performance in the longer term.
• Setting consistent engineering standards and practices across the teams and promoting engineering excellence.
• Working alongside sales and product, you will be the voice of Powerdesk engineering and will ensure planned development work is technically coherent – in particular, ensuring engineering involvement/design as capabilities move from roadmap to sprint planning.
• Keeping Brady Powerdesk customers informed and engaged with technical delivery, being “the face of Powerdesk engineering” both to Brady customers and other divisions within Brady.
• Ensuring consistent engineering delivery of product, building a culture of agile product development and continuous improvement.

Key Skills:

• Strong leadership and team management abilities. You will lead mixed teams in a variety of geographic locations and will be comfortable managing at a distance.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills. You will represent the short-term power engineering team across Brady and will need to ensure effective working practices with other divisions in the business. You will advocate for the engineering team and effective engineering decisions.
• The ability to identify business opportunities arising from technology and developing an overall technology strategy to maximise these opportunities. You will articulate the future technology landscape for everyone in the business and will lead in that direction.
• A strong set of technical skills across both cloud infrastructure and software development is necessary: while you will not often be coding, you will be capable of operating at a level of detail when necessary, challenging technical choices and bringing technical solutions to the team.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. You will be involved in deeply technical decisions and will need to resolve differences in approach between teams.

Knowledge:

• Strong understanding of the principles of cloud-based development, secure development principles and the software lifecycle management of SaaS/cloud-based applications is crucial.
• Technical understanding of event-driven data architectures and streaming systems is important, and a high level of numeracy is required.
• Good understanding of soft real-time systems and meeting performance targets (such as latency requirements) in such an environment.
• General understanding of trading and markets is important to this role, especially knowledge of algorithmic trading technologies.
• Any knowledge of the energy sector and energy trading would be extremely valuable.
• Security, performance, and end-user experience are all important non-functional requirements for Brady products, and good working knowledge of these areas is essential.
• Innovative and forward-thinking. You will be the final technical decision maker in Powerdesk, and will ensure alignment with overall Brady technology strategy.
• Detail-oriented with a commitment to delivery. You will build a culture of performance within the engineering teams, emphasising shipping product at regular cadence while improving quality
• Strong sense of ownership and responsibility. You will work alongside the product organisation to build the future of short-term energy trading.
• Reliability of forecasts. You will ensure that the planned workloads for the team are realistic and achievable, and you will provide credible estimates for delivery.

Experience:

• Extensive experience in software development and engineering management
• Proven track record in leading teams in similar industry sectors
• Experience with systems that process quantitative data in real-time
• Background in delivering high-quality SaaS solutions in a cloud environment
• Experience in International Energy trading markets is a plus
