Back End Developer

Back-End Developer

  • Location: Leeds (1x/month on-site, otherwise remote)
  • Rate: £500/day, Inside IR35
  • Duration: Until March 2027

Overview

We are supporting a consultancy in the public sector looking for a Back-End Developer to help build, scale and maintain backend services underpinning citizen-facing and internal systems. This is a hands-on engineering role with real ownership over infrastructure as well as code, so you'll be just as comfortable in Terraform and AWS as you are writing TypeScript. Mostly remote working with one day a month in Leeds for team collaboration and planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain backend services and APIs using TypeScript
  • Take ownership of AWS infrastructure, including provisioning, scaling and cost management
  • Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines to support frequent, reliable deployments
  • Write and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform, keeping environments consistent and reproducible
  • Work closely with product owners, architects and other engineers to translate requirements into robust technical solutions
  • Monitor system performance and reliability, and proactively resolve issues before they impact users
  • Contribute to technical decisions around architecture, tooling and best practice
  • Support security and compliance requirements relevant to public sector systems
  • Document technical decisions and processes clearly for the wider team

Key Requirements

  • Strong commercial experience with TypeScript in a back-end context
  • Solid hands-on AWS experience (e.g. Lambda, ECS, RDS, S3, IAM)
  • Proven DevOps background, including building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
  • Practical Terraform experience across real production environments
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote-first setup, with the flexibility to travel to Leeds monthly
  • Strong understanding of secure coding practices and cloud security fundamentals

Desirable

  • Python experience, particularly for scripting, automation or data-related tasks
  • Previous experience working on Government or NHS/public sector digital programmes
  • Familiarity with GDS standards or working within regulated environments
