Job summary

We are seeking 2 enthusiastic dosimetrists to join the Bristol Radiotherapy Physics Unit for a year to cover for maternity leave.

In Bristol we have 5 Elekta Agility-Head linacs with onboard imaging, Varian HDR brachytherapy (Prostate, Gynae, Oesophagus, Skin), Gammaknife, Molecular RT, 2 Philips Wide Bore CT's, Raystation TPS, Clarity Ultrasound and surface guided RT, as well as a 3D printer.

The successful candidates will aid the team of Dosimetrists and Clinical Scientists in ensuring we can provide safe and effective radiotherapy treatments to our patients.

The roles will focus on routine quality control (QC) checks on the department's linear accelerators, management of radiotherapy equipment, and service development projects.

The posts would be ideal for recent graduates of the Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) or those with a physics or related physical science degree who wish to develop a career in medical physics. They would provide good experience ahead of a future application to the Scientist Training Programme (STP).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will primarily be based within the dosimetry team.

Duties will include:

  • Completing QC as part of our routine QA programme as well as after breakdowns/repairs.
  • Performing patient specific treatment plan QC.
  • Management of dosimetry equipment

In addition to these tasks, there will be scope for participating in service development project work that will provide wider exposure and knowledge of radiotherapy physics activities.

Education and qualifications

Essential
  • BSc in Physics, Medical Physics, Clinical Technology, or equivalent
Desirable
  • MSc in Medical Physics

Experience

Essential
  • Experience of working on scientific projects e.g. dissertation, labs, research
  • Experience of working in a team
Desirable
  • Experience of carrying out quality control checks of radiotherapy equipment

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Essential
  • Ability to analyse and access scientific, technical and medical data
  • Sufficiently dextrous to position delicate instruments such as radiation dose meters accurately under the radiation beam to be measured without damaging the sensitive devices
  • Strong enough to move dosimetry equipment weighing up to 12 Kg
  • Good organisation skills
  • Good IT skills and knowledge of computing packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages
Desirable
  • Understand the role of Radiotherapy Physics and its application in the healthcare setting

  • Must have the emotional resilience to spend time working with, and in the vicinity of, terminally ill cancer patients including young such patients
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of accuracy
  • Ability to work effectively in a busy team and adapt to change

  • Ability to make judgements, including clinical judgements involving facts and situations that impact on patients
