Principal Engineer – We have been exclusively engaged by a leading ClimateTech business to hire a Principal Engineer who will provide key strategic direction for their growth plans in 2024. The Principal Engineer will report to the CTO and be responsible for shaping the technical roadmap for their platform which provides petabyte volumes of data for genuine climate impact.
The Principal Engineer will be their first hire at this level, providing technical leadership to an Engineering function of approximately 40 Engineers across Software, Data and SRE. In 2024 they plan to build a new, scalable platform, unlocking more products and driving growth/revenue. They are tech-agnostic; however, you will work extensively with Typescript, Python and AWS. The company has a very flexible work from home policy although, given the importance of the role, it would be expected that you’d come to the office so you need to be commutable to London.
What will the Principal Engineer do?
The role will broadly has three facets:
- You will provide architectural oversight around APIs, Data and Infrastructure, prioritising domain-driven design to align technical decisions with business goals. You’ll lead on the design and evolution of the APIs, ensuring data is efficiency processed across multiple domains; implement a new Data Mesh ensuring scalability and robustness as well as ensuring the platform is able to offer the required performance, reliability and scalability.
- You will be ‘hands-on’, driving quality through code reviews and even some coding. You will be involved in the most complex components of the platform.
- You will work with your team, your peers and the wider business to foster a culture of collaboration, sharing knowledge and implementing best practice across technical and non-technical teams.
What do they want from a Principal Engineer?
- First and foremost, the Principal Engineer must have a passion for making a difference through climate action and will bring high energy and EQ to this most important of leadership roles.
- You will need to demonstrate and breadth and depth of knowledge across software and data engineering. You must have extensive experience of APIs and microservice architecture as well as the end-to-end design and implementation of platforms delivering data-heavy products.
- You must have excellent understanding of Cloud-native solutions and the data-services they offer.
- You will have demonstrable experience of bring architectural maturity to a growing organisation and a capacity to make high-level design choices while driving architectural governance.
- You will be a problem solver and enjoy the challenge of developing solutions to complex problems.
- Tech Agnostic although in-depth knowledge of Typescript, Python, GraphQL and AWS would be beneficial.
