Staff Software Engineer -AI Document Intelligence Platform
Location: Hybrid (1 day per week in London office)
Compensation: £130,000 - £170,000 + meaningful equity
An early-stage AI company is building a next-generation platform that helps professionals extract insights and automate workflows across large document sets. Their product combines structured data, natural-language processing, and workflow automation to help users make faster, higher-quality decisions.
They're backed by leading European and US investors, with a proven founding team bringing deep technical and commercial experience. The team is small but growing, with a culture that blends high standards, intellectual honesty, and rapid delivery.
The Challenge
Imagine deploying a new data-extraction pipeline on Monday that saves a major enterprise client dozens of hours a week - and by Friday, you're already helping them integrate your APIs into their internal systems. This is a hands-on, high-impact environment where engineers see the direct effect of their work within days, not months.
What You'll Do
- Own major product components end-to-end: concept, design, delivery, and adoption.
- Build scalable APIs and backend systems in Python, integrating with multiple data sources.
- Partner with product and commercial teams to turn customer feedback into elegant technical solutions.
- Use cutting-edge developer tools (e.g. Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) to speed up iteration.
- Mentor engineers, define best practices, and influence the team's technical direction.
- Prioritise quality and maintainability while moving fast.
- Continuously learn and explore emerging AI technologies to keep the product ahead.
What We're Looking For
- Strong background in software engineering with a track record of building production systems.
- Proficiency in Python and comfort with modern backend frameworks and APIs.
- Experience in fast-paced, product-driven tech environments or startups.
- Product-minded mindset - you understand business goals and build with customer impact in mind.
- Excellent communicator, capable of translating complex ideas clearly.
- Intellectual curiosity and willingness to challenge assumptions.
- Commercial awareness and a pragmatic approach to trade-offs.
- Interest in AI-enabled products or automation platforms.
Nice to Have
- Experience leading small engineering teams or mentoring others.
- Familiarity with document processing, NLP, or knowledge-graph-style systems.
- Previous exposure to enterprise integrations or SaaS products.
- Comfort working with cloud-native infrastructure (e.g. AWS, GCP, Docker).
Why Join
- Deep ownership and autonomy - direct impact on product and strategy.
- High-trust, intellectually honest culture.
- Competitive comp and equity with strong growth potential.
- Opportunity to work with a technically elite, globally minded founding team.
