Job summary
Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) is a highly digitised healthcare organisation, having achieved the highest level of medical record adoption certification by the HIMSS (EMRAM Level 7). We are committed to driving innovation and excellence in healthcare through our strategic plan. Reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer, this is a new senior leadership role with Trust-wide influence. You will set the direction for technology infrastructure, cyber security, and digital platforms--ensuring our systems are robust, secure, and future-ready. There are many exciting programmes underway including potential expansion of our EPR across the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, procurement of an IT managed service provider as our contract expires in 2028, and two new hospitals under construction.
We are looking for an experienced technology leader who will bring:
- Senior leadership experience in large, complex organisations
- Deep expertise across infrastructure, cloud, cyber security, and enterprise architecture
- A strong track record of delivering large-scale transformation and managing major contracts
- The ability to translate strategy into delivery, influencing across organisational boundaries
- Excellent communication skills, able to engage both technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong results in leading and managing highly performing teams
Main duties of the job
You will:
- lead the development of a modern, resilient technology estate, spanning cloud, infrastructure, and core clinical systems
- shape and deliver the Trust's cyber security and system resilience strategy
- drive innovation across AI, automation, and emerging technologies
- oversee a complex, high-value outsourced IT managed service and supplier ecosystem
- champion interoperability and integration to enable seamless patient care
- establish strong governance, ensuring compliance with national standards and regulations

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Masters in a relevant leadership or technical area or relevant industry experience.
- The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) certification or similar.
- IT service delivery accreditation e.g. ITIL or similar.
- Professional recognised qualification e.g. BCS, CISSP etc.
- Professional certification in relevant technologies (e.g., Microsoft Azure, Cisco, VMware VDI, Dell vSAN, Citrix, Win Server, SQL Server).
- Project and programme management certification such as Prince2, Agile or MSP.
Experience
- Senior management and leadership of a technology team in a large and complex organisation.
- Providing cyber security expertise and delivery responsibility to a large and complex organisation.
- Developing and monitoring business continuity and disaster recovery plans for critical IT systems.
- Leading and coordinating incident response arrangements.
- Managing significant and highly complex contracts, which includes overall responsibility for the relationship, as well as for individual projects or programmes to be delivered.
- Managing risks, reporting and preparing papers and correspondence at Board level.
- Communicating complex information in a clear and understandable way to non-information managers and staff.
- Managing external customers, contractors, suppliers and third parties.
- Audit, information security or governance in the context of the NHS.
- Managing and improving an estate comprising legacy technologies in need of transformation, whilst maintaining focus on priorities that drive organisational change.
- Managing large scale highly complex and highly sensitive programmes that require significant clinical and executive engagement for success.
- Technical management of electronic patient records.
Knowledge
- Expert knowledge of industry-standard protocols such as HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) for healthcare, APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), and SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture).
- Cyber security expertise.
- A strategic understanding of cloud architecture to drive business value, ensure scalability, and manage costs.
- Understanding of Information Governance.
- An understanding of contract and procurement legislation and practice.
- Understanding of common information security and technology management frameworks such as ISO/IEC 27000/27001, ITIL, TOGAF and COBIT.
- Awareness and understanding of NHS organisational structure, plans and policies.
