Fast Response Maintenance Assistant Apprentice
Job summary
Perform work of a routine nature.
Responsible for minor repairs and routine planned maintenance activities on Mechanical, Electrical and Building fabrics as directed by management.
Ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.
Taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment.
Take instructions from radio controller attending and repairing minor reactive jobs of a mechanical, electrical and building nature.
Participate in the operation of the maintenance recording systems, including accepting and completion of jobs via handheld devices.
Carry out basic electrical and mechanical fault finding and remedial work to services, plant and equipment including:
i) Re-washer, repack valves and taps or replace when required
ii) Cleaning and unblocking Hospital sanitary fittings
iii) Clean and unblock external drainage systems when required using specialised drain cleaning equipment where appropriate
iv) Replacing lamps, tubes and electrical ballasts
v) Repairs of a minor nature to Nurse Call Handsets and systems
vi) Repairs of a minor nature to hospital phone systems
Undertakes minor repair works and general maintenance activities at the request of the Assistant Engineers.
Assist qualified craftsmen on repair and installation work.
Main duties of the job
Carry out PPM of a minor nature after appropriate training on a range of plant including:
i) Cleaning of ventilation grills
ii) Assisting with water flushing tasks
iii) Changing of shower heads and hoses
iv) Air Handling Unit inspections and filter changing
v) Servicing of light fittings
vi) Nurse Call systems
Collecting rubbish and removal during emergencies.
Use all relevant tools and equipment.
Communicate with work colleagues and customers and updating them on progress as required.
Completes all report sheets and plant log books as necessary.
To ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.
You must be able to cope with the physical aspects of the job and have an electrical / mechanical aptitude. Must be capable of working with minimum supervision and be of a responsible character, full training will be provided where appropriate.
This post will require the appointee to obtain, within 3 months, the following training requirements (if not already achieved):
Safe operation of mechanical drain clearing equipment
Safe isolation of hot and cold water services
Safe local isolation of Air Handling Plant
Safe use of ladders and steps
Manual Handling
Customer Service Skills

Qualifications
- City and Guilds Craft Certificate / NVQ Level II or equivalent or relevant experience
- City and Guilds Advanced Craft
- Apprenticeship or other recognised and approved training in Electrical / Mechanical services
Experience
- Experience of Electrical / Mechanical / plumbing maintenance
- Experience in a mechanical environment
- Experience of working in a similar hands on environment
- Building machinery
- Relevant post apprenticeship experience
Knowledge
- Good all round trade knowledge
- Good understanding of building services
Skills
- Must have good Craft Skills
