Alation Technical Engineer

About the Job you are considering:

The Alation Technical Consultant is responsible for the implementation, configuration, and ongoing support of the Alation Data Intelligence Platform. The role focuses on onboarding data sources, enabling metadata management and governance capabilities, and ensuring the platform operates effectively to support data discovery, cataloging, and stewardship initiatives.

Hybrid working:

The places that you work from day to day will vary according to your role, your needs, and those of the business; it will be a blend of Company offices, client sites, and your home; noting that you will be unable to work at home 100% of the time.

Your Role:

Platform Setup & Deployment

  • Install, deploy, and upgrade Alation platform components across cloud and/or on-premises environments.
  • Configure integrations with enterprise infrastructure, authentication services, and security frameworks.

Configuration & Administration

  • Configure Alation platform settings, user roles, permissions, workflows, stewardship, and governance features.
  • Perform platform administration, monitoring, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and regular maintenance activities.

Data Source Onboarding & Metadata Hydration

  • Connect and onboard databases, data warehouses, BI tools, data lakes, and other enterprise data sources into Alation.
  • Support migration of metadata from legacy repositories, including Excel-based inventories, data dictionaries, SharePoint-hosted metadata assets, and existing catalog/governance tools into Alation.
  • Enable metadata extraction, profiling, lineage capture, catalog enrichment, and metadata quality processes to ensure comprehensive and accurate metadata availability.
  • Support bulk metadata import, mapping, transformation, and reconciliation activities where metadata is sourced outside of automated connectors.

Implementation Guidance & Operational Support

  • Apply Alation, metadata management, and data governance best practices to support successful platform adoption.
  • Provide technical guidance, issue resolution, and operational support to business and technical stakeholders.
  • Develop documentation, operational procedures, metadata onboarding standards, and knowledge transfer materials to support long-term platform sustainability.
  • Collaborate with data owners, stewards, architects, and governance teams to improve metadata coverage, quality, and usability.

Your Skills:

  • Hands-on experience implementing and administering Alation Data Catalog.
  • Strong understanding of metadata management, data governance, data cataloging, business glossaries, and data lineage concepts.
  • Experience onboarding metadata from databases, cloud platforms, BI tools, and legacy sources such as Excel files, CSVs, and data dictionaries.
  • Familiarity with SQL, APIs, metadata integration patterns, and authentication mechanisms (SSO/SAML/OAuth).
  • Strong troubleshooting, stakeholder management, and documentation skills.
