Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and self-motivated Band 6 Senior Pharmacy Technician for Clinical Trials. Looking for an individual with clinical trials and aseptic experience who is passionate about making a difference and contributing to improving patient/carer experience to join our Clinical Trials team at St Mary's Pharmaceutical Unit (SMPU).

The pharmacy clinical trials team based at SMPU Pharmacy (Field Way) provides trial set up and regulatory compliance and a preparative service for commercial and non-commercial trials requiring aseptic manipulation of patient doses. This activity is increasing year on year with significant growth in the area on Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATIMPs).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out the role of Senior Pharmacy Technician - Clinical Trials and will be responsible for the following:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the technical services pharmacy clinical trials services
  • Supporting the lead and specialist pharmacists in the set-up of clinical trials
  • Ensuring that all regulatory approvals are in place for clinical trials
  • Providing day-to-day training, supervision and support to staff
  • Monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for clinical trials.
  • Staff management responsibilities as required
  • Support with the Clinical Governance and Risk Management
  • Excellent attention to detail, high level of initiative, able to problem solve, able to work under pressure
  • The role entails good organisational, communication, analytical, negotiation, presentation and IT skills.
  • Preparation of clinical trials, chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition
  • Coordination of new clinical trial implementation including ATIMPs.
  • Develop new procedures and processes to manage the storage, preparation and handling of ATIMPs.
  • Validation of specialist equipment and implement a dedicated preparative service for ATIMPs.
  • coordination all clinical trial functions within aseptic services to meet the needs of the service.
  • Ensure compliance to procedures and national standards (GMP, GCP and The Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations 2004).

Qualifications

Essential
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Substantial experience as an aseptically trained technician in hospital or commercial sectors.
  • Current post Band 5 or above
  • Good team player and sensitive to the need to optimise team performance
  • Good patient communication and interaction skills.
  • NVQ L3/BTEC Pharmacy services
  • Good working knowledge of safe dispensing and aseptic practices
  • Knowledge and understanding of GCP/GMP legislation and QA and its application to aseptic processing
  • Able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills
  • Good attention to detail and responsible attitude to quality and accuracy
  • Experience in Clinical Trials day to day running of service, attending meetings, co-ordinating aspects related to organisation of trials GCP/GMP legislation (including preparation for inspection), clinical trial set-up and management, manufacture of IMPs and QP release, clinical trials in specialist areas
Desirable
  • Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Assurance experience
  • Leeds Aseptic Dispensing Course or Equivalent
  • Completion of The Clinical Trials short course developed by NHS TSET (the Technical Specialist Education and Training group) and facilitated by the University of Leeds.
  • Relevant post qualification Aseptic service courses e.g. APDM, ASFM

Experience

Essential
  • Broad experience of hospital pharmacy
  • Post qualification experience in aseptic services
  • Post qualification experience as checking technician.

  • Computer literate. Aware of (and work within) own limitations
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate injections or prepare pharmaceutical products, and good hand-eye co-ordination
