Senior Server Support Consultant
Job summary
Design and technical implementation and support of the Health Board's IT Server Systems. Provision of support to staff, and where appropriate, training and mentoring of junior IT staff.
The term "IT Server Systems" refers to networked IT Systems (principally, but not limited to those serving file, applications, databases or other infrastructure services) using the Microsoft Windows or Linux Server operating systems.
This post is fixed term/secondment for 12 months from the start date to meet the needs of the service. If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post
Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity exists within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board's Digital Operations Department for a Senior Server Consultant.
The Server Team maintain two main data centres which provide the compute and storage infrastructure to run critical applications for most of the UHB within a highly virtualised server environment. Increasingly there is a need to supplement this traditional on-premises hosting model and extend workloads into the cloud.
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board have an opening for a Band 7 Senior Server consultant who will provide technical expertise and leadership within the Server Team.
Successful applicants will deal with all technical aspects associated with the health and wellbeing of compute and storage infrastructure in order to ensure delivery of clinical and business services within the Health Board.
Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic and will want to work at pace to deliver change in an environment littered with interesting challenges.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Skills /Knowledge
- High level of technical ability in hardware and software fault diagnosis.
- Proficiency with Network Troubleshooting tools
- Systems automation through scripting e.g PowerShell, Bash, Python, .NET/ C#
- UNIX & Linux - installation, configuration and administration in an enterprise or corporate setting
- Veeam installation, configuration and administration
Experience
- (Min 4yrs) Windows Server installation (including associated infra services, AD, DNS, DHCP), configuration, and administration in a medium to large enterprise or corporate setting
- (Min 4yrs) Infrastructure, installation and setup (e.g. physical server, storage array/SAN, network load balancer commissioning)
- (Min 4yrs) Troubleshooting hardware and software faults at 2nd or 3rd line level
- UNIX/Linux Server installation, configuration, and administration in an enterprise or corporate setting
- Azure or AWS Administration Experience
- System Monitoring (inc. SIEM, SNMP & Performance monitoring).
- IIS Configuration and Management
- MS SQL Server Administration and Management
- SAN and Storage array configuration and management. Familiarity with fibre channel host attachment and MPIO.
- IT Project management
Qualifications
- Achieved Grade or 4 years experience
- Relevant IT certifications relating to Microsoft, Linux, VMWare, Veeam ITIL, Azure or AWS e.g. VMWare VCP Microsoft Azure Fundamentals Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner AWS Certified SysOps Administrator AWS Certified Solutions Architect
Special Knowledge
- Provisioning and administering servers and services in Azure and AWS
- Infrastructure-as-Code development and deployment using Terraform, CFN or CDK
- CI/CD Pipeline and workflow experience- GitHub Actions or AWS Code Deploy
- Git based Source Code Management (SCM)
- AWS LZA, Control Tower
