Job summary

As an integral part of the Digital Operations team within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, the Server and Infrastructure Manager plays a vital role in providing reliable, safe and effective infrastructure delivery. Responsible for the leadership, development and resource management of nine technical staff supporting all of the Health Boards IT Infrastructure and Systems.

Maintain and develop the Health Boards Infrastructure and Systems architecture.Lead a diverse team of IT professionals to proactively and re-actively support the Health Boards Infrastructure and Systems 24x7. Maintain and evolve the Health Boards business continuity plan for clinical and business critical services. Represent the Health Board at committees, forums and engagements with equivalent positions at other NHS Health Boards.

Main duties of the job

Summary of the Main Duties of the Server & Infrastructure Manager;

  • The management of all elements relating to the strategy, design, implementation, and support of the Health Board's server infrastructure.
  • Day to day line management responsibility for server team staff - ensuring that server services are provided by these staff appropriately and in accordance with Health Board policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all Health Board policies relating to IT Server Systems (in particular the IT Security Policies) are applied appropriately in the use of all the Health Board's IT Server Systems and infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Health Board's IT DR (disaster recovery) policy.
  • Responsibility for implementation and enforcement of all measures deemed necessary to protect the security of all the Health Board's IT Server Systems and infrastructure.
  • Responsibility for ensuring that system performance of all the Health Board's IT Server Systems and infrastructure at agreed service levels.
  • Provide mentoring and support for members of the Server Team. Ensure appropriate knowledge and skills transfer is consistent with their assigned duties.
  • Any additional duties that may be defined by the IT Director or Head of Digital Operations.

Knowledge

Essential
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
Desirable
  • Working knowledge of databases for Windows and Linux (SQL, Oracle and MySQL)

Technical and Experience

Essential
  • Educated to MSc standard or equivalent experience - pertinent to the technical nature of this post.
  • Server installation, configuration, and administration in a mixed corporate LAN & WAN environment of Microsoft Windows Server Operating Systems and UNIX of which 3 years must be in senior roles with some management requirement.
  • Extensive knowledge & skills in Windows Server and UNIX (including hardware & software design, installation, configuration, and administration in mixed corporate LAN & WAN environment).
  • Team leadership and management.
  • Infrastructure, installation, configuration, and administration (e.g. Domain Controllers, DNS servers, DHCP servers, Firewalls, Web Servers & Proxy Servers)
  • High level of technical ability in hardware and software and fault diagnosis.
  • Experienced in assisting with the production of high-quality project documentation including Business Cases and Project Plans.
Desirable
  • A demonstrable understanding of, and the management of: - Server Operating systems.
  • A demonstrable understanding of, and the management of: - Storage systems inc. SAN & NAS
  • Working experience of Virtualization inc. OS (VMWare, Hyper-V) appliances & storage
  • Experience in the management of Server and Infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrate Adaptability, Flexibility and Motivation to the service

Essential
  • Good interpersonal skills and an ability to lead and work well in a team environment but able to work on his/her own initiative
  • Ability to work with colleagues on a technical level and interpret requirements and propose workable solutions

  • Desire to develop new/enhanced skills and increase knowledge set
