The post is for an Adult Consultant Psychiatrist in Eating Disorders (ED) to work in the community setting. The opportunity arises as service expansion through long term plan funding now supports expansion of the consultant body.

Every Consultant has a unique leadership role within the clinical teams/pathways for which they are responsible. Academic, teaching and management interests are strongly encouraged and supported. With appropriate adjustment of responsibilities, the role could be full time, or part time at 8 sessions.

Main duties of the job

The post joins a team of 8 Consultant Psychiatrists in the all age Vincent Square Eating Disorder Service.

The post holder will provide psychiatric and medical assessment and management of adults with ED in the assessment and community team pathways. They will be well supported by a psychiatry specialty doctor, and a multidisciplinary team.

They will provide clinical leadership and consultation within the team. They will work collaboratively with colleagues across the service, including the intensive community treatment and day patient services, as well as other stakeholders, including acute hospital partners.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. To provide clinical leadership within the Adult Assessment and Community team.
  2. To provide consultant responsibility for patient care within these pathways.
  3. Consultation to other members of the multidisciplinary team regarding the management of urgent assessments and risk.
  4. To support the Assessment Team managing new referrals and triage.
  5. To support the Assessment Team providing high quality initial assessment and formulation of appropriate care plans/pathways into treatment within the Adult Service.
  6. To provide comprehensive clinical assessments for complex/urgent new referrals (typically one or two new assessments weekly).
  7. To attend the weekly referral and assessment meeting providing support and consultation for team.
  8. To diagnose patients with an ICD10 code at assessment/assessment meeting and ensure that these are documented appropriately, along with all other mandatory data recording
  9. Participation in the weekly Community Team meetings, providing leadership, supervision and consultation for the team.
  10. To provide psychiatric review and management of Adult Community Team patients typically 4-5 patients per week, including patients seen on medical wards.
  11. Manage and develop protocols with local medical services.
  12. Provide RC cover for patients in medical wards at ChelWest
  13. To develop and sustain good working relationships and effective MEED pathways with Acute Hospitals.
  14. To contribute to CPA meetings, as appropriate.
  15. To contribute to MHA assessments as appropriate.
  16. To support the maintenance of a psychologically minded clinic culture.
  17. To regularly attend the fortnightly Staff Group, Continuing Professional Development sessions and Consultant meetings.
  18. To manage, and provide training and clinical supervision for the team Specialty Doctor and Psychiatry trainees seeking special interest sessions in the service.
  19. To provide cross cover for Consultant Psychiatrist colleagues in the Eating Disorder Service.
  20. To be an active member of the SMT.
  21. Work along with other MDT colleagues to develop the Adult Community team.
  22. Participation in the development of new models of service to improve delivery and outcome, taking into account the views of commissioners, service users and evidence of best practice.
  23. Participation in development of clinical protocols as required.
  24. To maintain accurate and up to date clinical records.
  25. To participate in the administration patient information systems and ensure that data are entered in accordance with service policies and guidance.
  26. To contribute to collection and monitoring of Clinical Outcome data across the service.
  27. To liaise with statutory and non-statutory sector agencies concerning the treatment and management of patients.
  28. To ensure discharges are managed in accordance with service policies and guidance.
  29. To complete and contribute to the completion of Serious Untoward Incident Reports as required.
  30. To work in accordance with service policies and guidelines.
  31. Maintaining up to date Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential
  • Primary Medical Degree
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • Inclusion on the General Adult Psychiatry Specialist Register (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date)
  • Section 12 MHA Approved Approved Clinician status
Desirable
  • MRCPsych (or equivalent)
  • An additional post graduate qualification of relevance to (own specialty)
