Network Engineer
Role Overview
The Network Engineer sits within the Strategy and Architecture function of Digital Services and is responsible for the design, build, operation, and continuous improvement of enterprise network infrastructure across physical and virtual environments.
The role provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise, ensuring resilient, secure, and scalable network services aligned to business needs and digital strategy. The post holder will actively drive innovation, challenge existing approaches, and support both internally delivered and third-party services.
Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, support, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure.

Act as a network subject matter expert, working autonomously on complex network configuration, security, and infrastructure tasks.

Lead and assure the design and documentation of new network solutions.

Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, security, and regulatory requirements.

Translate business requirements into technical designs, undertaking analysis and recommending options.

Drive continuous improvement and innovation within network architecture and infrastructure services.

Identify risks, undertake impact analysis, and define mitigation strategies.

Provide quality assurance for changes to existing network services.

Build and maintain effective relationships with managed service providers and key suppliers.
Essential Knowledge & Experience
-
Strong hands-on experience with Cisco networking, Azure, AWS, Zscaler, SolarWinds, Microsoft Sentinel, and Avaya telephony.

In-depth knowledge of SD-WAN, VLANs, Azure vWAN, and static and dynamic routing.

Experience supporting and designing network infrastructure in large, complex organisations.

Strong understanding of network monitoring, supplier management, and operational service delivery.

Experience producing technical design documentation and service artefacts.

Knowledge of ITSM/ISO 20000 and industry best practice.
