Job summary

City Hospitals Independent Commercial Enterprises Ltd. (CHoICE) has an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to fill the position of a Senior Electronics Technician within the Clinical Engineering Department. The successful applicant would be joining a team that provides a full medical equipment management service, responsible for commissioning, fault diagnosis / repair, maintenance and disposal processes within the Sunderland Royal Hospital and associated sites. The Department also operates an on call service to provide the Trust with 24 hour emergency cover regarding medical equipment. The range of medical equipment consists of ventilators, incubators, infusion devices, diathermy, ophthalmology equipment and many more. Constant clinical advances means that ongoing training is provided so that the team is at the forefront of new medical equipment that enters the clinical environment and the networking capabilities that are advancing within the medical fields.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Engineering Dept within the Estates Hard FM section of CHOICE is based at the Sunderland Royal Hospital. The main sites covered by this section of the Clinical Engineering Dept are the Sunderland Royal Hospital, Sunderland Eye Infirmary, Durham Treatment Centre and the Childrens Centre with around 900 acute beds. Other outreach areas are included such as the Washington Galleries and Washington Primary Care Centre. Home care support for home dialysis equipment is also provided. The Clinical Engineering team providing this service consists of 10 technicians, a Head of Department and a secretary. The Department operates from Monday to Friday 08:00 to16:30 with an out of hours on call service for any emergencies. Applications are invited from persons with a Degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or similar qualification in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience. They will need to be a team player, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to use their own initiative when required. They will also need to have the ability to communicate effectively with all medical staff in providing technical support and specialised advice that may be challenged. This will be supported by sound reason there by ensuring that best clinical practice is achieved. A full driving licence is essential.

The CHoICE Clinical Engineering Department is responsible for the management of an extensive range of medical equipment and related services throughout the CHS portfolio and any potential additions via business developments that are used for the purpose of diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of patients. Service provision is divided into four separate specialist areas:

Clinical Engineering: Renal Dialysis: Paging System: Mobile Radio System

A team of specialist technicians provide support for a full equipment management service, responsible for safety testing of new equipment, fault diagnosis/repair and maintenance within specialist clinical areas including:

Vital signs monitoring

Anaesthetic gas monitoring

Ventilators (adult and neonatal)

Cardiology

Patient data storage/retrieval and networking systems

Neonatal support systems

Renal dialysis

Technicians also provide an evaluation service for proposed new purchases and a commissioning service for newly delivered equipment.

Management of the disposal pathway is also provided for end of life medical equipment adhering to WEEE regulations.

Full technical support is provided for the hospital paging system, all radio communication equipment and networks, ensuring key communications are constantly maintained throughout client premises.

Training for nurses and other clinical staff is provided in the safe and effective use of medical devices. Competency based training is also provided for specialist clinical areas along with the supervision and training of trainee technicians.

Members of the Clinical Engineering team are expected to work closely and effectively with other technical and clinical staff in providing a professional and high quality service. The team also provides an out of hours on call rota 365 days a year.

Physical Skills

Essential
  • Manual dexterity in working with precision tools and miniature components.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing technological environment.
  • A logical, analytical mind capable of prolonged periods of concentration required in the repair, testing and calibration of complex medical electronic equipment.
  • Capable of working effectively in demanding, emergency and distressing situations.
  • Fit & healthy as work does involve lifting heavy equipment.
  • Senior technicians must be aware of the stressful situations that may occur when working on complex medical equipment in emergency situations.
  • Senior Technicians will be expected to work on equipment within clinical areas. They must be aware of the possible exposure to emotionally distressing situations whilst undertaking this work which may be alongside critically-ill patients, sometimes with the patients family present.
  • Must not be colour blind

Experience

Essential
  • Significant experience within an electronics / medical electronics related discipline.
  • Excellent analytical skills combined with an in depth comprehensive knowledge of medical device technology.
  • Broad experience in the management of medical devices.
  • Competent in the repair of computer based equipment

Qualifications

Essential
  • Degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or HNC/HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering plus comprehensive experience and specialist knowledge of medical device technology along with current analogue / digital electronic techniques to degree level. This is gained through formal qualification, plus in depth experience, specialist manufacturers training courses and Biomedical equipment maintenance practice.
  • Knowledge of human physiology and physiological measurement
Desirable
  • Formal qualification in physics, Biology or Chemistry.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, optics, computer networking and audio video systems.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential
  • Good communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff in formal and informal situations throughout the CFS business
  • Self-motivated being able to organize own workload in a constantly changing and demanding environment.
  • Ability to switch from one task to another as priorities change. A complex repair can be interrupted by an emergency or higher priority call to a clinical area at any time. This is the norm and not the exception
  • Diagnose and repair faults to component level on a wide range of complex equipment including life support systems.
  • Intense concentration is required when carrying out these repairs and calibration along with the need to use a high level of manual dexterity in order to manipulate precision tools and miniature components
  • Repair work regularly requires the use of service manuals, circuit diagrams and test equipment for the diagnosis and repair of complex faults. This process requires intense and timely concentration that can be broken by interruptions.
  • PC literate with an in depth knowledge of Access, word & XL and competent in the use of the internet and e-mail.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence, but still as part of a team.
  • A flexible approach to working hours and conditions.
  • Take part in an out of hours on call rota
  • Self-motivated and ability to work under pressure
  • A positive and helpful attitude when dealing with all staff in any situation.
  • Relationships can be built up with patients throughout treatment causing distress if patients do not recover.
