Installation Field Engineer
Overview of Role
As the Installation Field Engineer (internally titled as Project and Field Engineer), you will install and activate a range of network and telecoms services at customer premises across multiple sites, both existing and new; throughout the UK. This includes broadband, fibre, SIP, VoIP, and LAN/WAN solutions. This is a hands-on, field-based role that combines technical expertise with customer interaction, requiring a professional approach and strong attention to detail. You will carry out site surveys, configure and test equipment, resolve issues, and ensure all installations meet quality and health and safety standards.
While the primary focus of the role is installation, you will also provide 2nd line technical support where requiredassisting with escalated faults, carrying out advanced diagnostics, and supporting the wider technical team to maintain high service standards.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and test network and telecoms services including broadband, fibre, SIP, VoIP, and LAN/WAN solutions
- Carry out fibre splicing, cable termination, and structured cabling to required standards
- Conduct site surveys to assess installation requirements, infrastructure readiness, and potential challenges
- Liaise with the Service Delivery Coordinator to ensure correct stock, equipment, and documentation before attending site
- Work with network providers and third-party contractors to complete installations and resolve on-site issues
- Ensure installations are completed to company quality standards and comply with all health and safety requirements
- Provide clear and accurate documentation of completed work, including configuration details, test results, and any follow-up actions
- Assist with 2nd line troubleshooting, supporting the Service Desk and Network Operations teams with diagnostics and remedial work
- Perform remote or on-site fault analysis for escalated customer issues, ensuring timely resolution or appropriate escalation
- Maintain company tools, equipment, and vehicles to ensure they remain safe and in good working order
- Deliver excellent customer service, building trust and rapport with clients while representing the company professionally
- Assist with the handover process to customers and internal teams, ensuring systems are fully operational and clearly documented
Skills and Requirements
- Proven technical experience in telecoms, networking, or IT field engineering, with strong hands-on capability across routers, switches, broadband, fibre, and VoIP/SIP-based services.
- Solid understanding of core networking concepts including routing, switching, VLANs, firewalls, and structured cabling standards.
- Working knowledge of VoIP and SIP technologies, including deployment, configuration, and fault resolution.
- Proficient in network diagnostics and troubleshooting, using tools such as network analysers, remote access systems, and line testing equipment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes and implement effective technical solutions.
- Capable of producing and following detailed technical documentation, network diagrams, and installation standards.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Self-driven and organised, able to manage workload effectively and work across multiple concurrent projects or service tickets.
- Awareness of on-site health and safety protocols and commitment to safe installation and maintenance practices.
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and mobile job/ticketing systems for reporting and documentation.
- Relevant IT or network qualification (Level 3 or higher) preferred but not essential.
- Full UK driving licence essential, with flexibility to travel extensively to customer sites across the region.
