Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js / TypeScript)

London (Hybrid) up to £80,000 + Equity + Bonus

We’re working with a growing fintech company tackling a real problem around pay and financial wellbeing, already used by employers across the UK.

They’re now hiring a backend-leaning engineer to take ownership of core services and help level up how the platform is designed, built, and maintained.

What you’ll be doing

• Designing and building scalable backend services in Node.js / TypeScript
• Owning features and systems end-to-end — from architecture through to production
• Improving API design, reliability, and performance
• Strengthening testing practices (unit + integration) and code quality
• Working on data & integration workflows (APIs, webhooks, pipelines)
• Enhancing observability, logging, and production stability
• Collaborating closely with Product and a hands-on Lead Engineer

Tech environment

• Node.js / TypeScript
• AWS (RDS, general infrastructure)
• PostgreSQL + MongoDB
• Docker, CI/CD pipelines
• Jest / testing frameworks
• REST APIs, integrations, data workflows

What they’re looking for

• Strong experience building backend systems with Node.js / TypeScript
• Solid understanding of API design and scalable systems
• Experience with Postgres (or similar relational DBs)
• Someone who cares about clean code, testing, and maintainability
• Comfortable owning work and making pragmatic technical decisions

Nice to have (not essential)

• Experience with frameworks like Express, NestJS, or Fastify
• Exposure to event-driven systems, queues, or data pipelines
• AWS production experience
• Background in fintech, payments, payroll, or regulated environments

What success looks like

In your first few months, you’ll:

• Take ownership of key backend areas and reduce production issues
• Help introduce or improve a practical testing strategy
• Improve at least one core integration or data workflow
• Contribute to raising engineering standards across the team
