Following a successful bid for funding from the NationalInstitute of Health and Care Research, Cornwall Council is now developing a Health Determinants Research Collaborative in Cornwall.

The HDRC will bring together expertise from partners across Cornwall Council, the Universities of Exeter, Plymouth, and Falmouth, VCSE organisations, NIHR Research Delivery Networks, NHS and communities in Cornwall to build research infrastructure and skills across Cornwall. The HDRC will help transform understanding of our people, places and wider determinants that have a significant impact on health inequalities in our communities.

We are now seeking motivated and enthusiastic candidates to help deliver the work of the HDRC as a Research Support Officer over the next five years. The Research Support Officer will report to the Senior Research Support Officer, work closely with colleagues in departments across the Council, academic colleagues and partners across Cornwall as part of a team of research support officers.

We are currently recruiting for 5 Research Support Officers to work in alignment with the following directorates or specialist area: Together For Families; Care and Wellbeing; Neighbourhoods; Sustainable Growth and Development; and Communities & Coproduction.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the HDRC Senior Research Officer and Service Lead in establishing and delivering Cornwall HDRC.
  • Develop the role of HDRC Research Support Officer within the local authority, promoting research and engaging key colleagues in the development and delivery of HDRC research.
  • Establish a network of contacts and develop communications and processes to deliver wider determinants of health research.
  • Expected to independently work closely with colleagues within and across Council directorates, and wider partners to develop an understanding of the research needs and culture within the Council as well as the barriers to knowledge translation and implementation within and across HDRC partners.
  • Identify learning needs in relation to research planning, setup and delivery in the LA. Signpost to established research-relevant training provided by partners such as NIHR and higher education institutions and work with the HDRC Research Delivery and Development Group to plan training for any unmet needs.
  • Developing bespoke programmes for developing research skills and activity, commissioning specialist training to complement in-house activities.
  • Support the submission of funding applications.
  • To assist in the preparation of reports and associated papers, presentations and briefings.
  • Adhere to the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Ensure efficient and effective data management processes.

Job responsibilities

The role will be integral to establishing the HDRC, helping develop research culture and capacity, and creating strong links to other departments in the Council and the community. As the HDRC evolves the Research Support Officers will support the development of research funding bids and delivery of studies and associated activities of the HDRC across Cornwall.

Person Specification

What you will need to succeed

Desirable
  • Training and experience in public health research
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and communication skills
  • Competence with Microsoft packages (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
