Embedded Electronics Engineer - Matter & Thread Dimming Projects

Embedded / Electronics Engineer – Matter & Thread Dimming Products

Location

UK Wiltshire HQ based

Occasional travel to UK or EU manufacturing / test sites may be required.

Role Purpose

To design, develop and industrialise Matter-certified, Thread-based dimming products for smart lighting applications, from concept through to production. The role spans hardware, firmware and system integration, with a strong focus on regulatory compliance, interoperability and high-quality dimming performance.

Key Responsibilities

Product & System Design

  • Design smart dimming products (leading-edge, trailing-edge, 0–10V, DALI or PWM as applicable) compliant with Matter over Thread
  • Define system architecture covering MCU, RF, power electronics, sensing and protection
  • Ensure excellent dimming performance (flicker-free, low-noise, wide load compatibility)

Hardware Engineering

  • Schematic design and PCB layout oversight for low-power RF and mains-rated electronics
  • Selection of Thread-capable SoCs (e.g. Nordic, Silicon Labs, NXP, Espressif)
  • Design for EMC, ESD, thermal performance and manufacturability
  • Support prototype builds, bring-up and debugging

Firmware & Connectivity

  • Develop or integrate embedded firmware for Matter and Thread stacks
  • Implement device clusters relevant to lighting and dimming
  • Support OTA updates, commissioning and diagnostics
  • Work with mobile apps and ecosystem partners (Apple, Google, Amazon)

Compliance & Certification

  • Lead or support Matter certification and Thread certification
  • Ensure compliance with UK/EU regulations (UKCA, CE, LVD, EMC, RED, RoHS)
  • Work with test houses and certification bodies

Manufacturing & Lifecycle Support

  • Collaborate with contract manufacturers to support NPI and mass production
  • Create technical documentation (schematics, test specs, production test procedures)
  • Support field issues, root-cause analysis and continuous improvement

Required Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience designing embedded or electronics products for volume manufacture
  • Strong understanding of Matter and Thread (or closely related IoT protocols such as Zigbee)
  • Experience with dimming or lighting control electronics
  • Knowledge of mains-powered product design and safety considerations
  • Familiarity with UK/EU regulatory requirements

Desirable

  • Hands-on experience taking a Matter product through certification
  • Experience with smart lighting ecosystems (Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa)
  • Knowledge of DALI, KNX or professional lighting control systems
  • Experience in cost-down and design optimisation for high-volume products

Qualifications

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Electronics Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related discipline

Personal Attributes

  • Structured, detail-oriented problem solver
