Electronic System Engineer

Role: Field Systems Engineer (Test, Installation and Commissioning)

Location: Field based, home office in Oxfordshire or the Thames Valley. Travel to customer sites in Oxford, Bicester, Milton Keynes, Bristol and Bedfordshire, plus the main office and workshop in Sheffield.

Salary: £40,000 to £50,000, with flexibility above this for strong NI LabVIEW skills.

ABOUT THE ROLE

• We're a systems integrator building bespoke hardware and software for automated data acquisition, test, measurement, control and IoT, with customers in healthcare, energy, aerospace and defence, automotive, and R&D
• After strong growth in 2025/6 across the South, we have live projects with a healthcare customer in Oxford, an aerospace and defence customer in Bristol and automotive customers in Milton Keynes, plus customers around Southampton, London, Coventry and Bedfordshire
• Our Systems Engineering team builds each system in the Sheffield workshop. You take it to site, lead the install and stay the main point of contact through commissioning and ongoing support
• This is first and foremost an electrical role. It's commissioning, not design, though you'll have input into design discussions with the Sheffield team
• You'll join as a Systems Engineer or Senior Systems Engineer, depending on your technical knowledge and proven capability

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Test, install and commission systems on site, then troubleshoot and fix any issues, including systems level repair on complex kit such as EV control systems and MRI scanners
• Integrate with customer technology and carry out hardware builds and modifications on site
• Act as the local engineer for a site, running investigations and supporting systems already in the field
• Act as project lead for delivery on the current 22 system programme, including attending project meetings
• Manage projects through the full lifecycle, taking on bigger and more complex projects as your skills grow
• Select the right measurement hardware for each customer specification
• Work with business development on technical solutions, costings, requirements qualification and RFQ responses
• Write technical documentation to our quality system, including specifications, test plans and user manuals
• Give technical presentations and demonstrations, and work closely with the Sheffield engineers so issues are resolved quickly
• Develop data acquisition and control applications and user interfaces as your software skills grow

ESSENTIAL

• Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (electronics and communications, control systems or mechatronics also considered)
• A strong electrical or electronic background. Candidates from electrical design or commissioning with limited PLC or software experience are welcome if they're willing to learn on the job
• Experience troubleshooting and repairing complex electrical systems at a systems level, including signal integrity, grounding and shielding
• Knowledge of instrumentation, control and industrial automation, plus measurement and instrumentation design
• Experience with test and measurement equipment. National Instruments is preferred, but Beckhoff, Keysight and similar are fine
• Proven experience in requirements capture, writing technical proposals and delivering test systems
• eCAD experience (EPlan preferred). Siemens or Allen Bradley PLC experience is preferred but not essential
• Results focused, well organised and a methodical problem solver, with excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, and able to work in a team or on your own
• Legal right to live and work in the UK, with a valid passport for global travel
• Full, clean UK driving licence and your own vehicle. You'll travel around 50% of the time, sometimes at short notice, with regular overnight stays in Sheffield

DESIRABLE

• NI hardware platforms (DAQmx, cRIO, PXI), LabVIEW FPGA and Real Time, and NI certifications (CLD, CLA, CTD, CTA, CLED)
• Software experience, ideally LabVIEW. TwinCAT, Siemens TIA, Python, C, C++ or Java are also useful, along with object oriented principles
• Machine safety knowledge (13849 or 62061), plus the Machinery Directive and the Low Voltage Directive
• 18th Edition, and able to draw system level diagrams in CAD (EPlan preferred)
