Overview
We’re supporting a large-scale payments transformation programme and are looking for an experienced Senior Java Engineer with strong hands-on ICON IPF experience to join a high-performing engineering team.
This role will focus on the development and enhancement of enterprise payment systems within modern cloud-based architectures, working closely with major banking clients on complex payment processing solutions.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical engineering capability alongside deep knowledge of ISO 20022 payments and modern Java microservices environments.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain scalable payment applications using Java and Spring Boot
- Deliver solutions within microservices-based architectures across cloud-native environments
- Work extensively with the ICON IPF Payments framework within enterprise banking environments
- Develop and support event-driven and asynchronous integrations using Apache Kafka
- Collaborate closely with banking clients, product teams and technical stakeholders to deliver payment solutions aligned to business requirements
- Contribute to system design, architecture discussions and technical best practice
- Support integration and processing across ISO 20022 payment schemes and payment types
- Troubleshoot and optimise high-volume payment processing applications
- Participate in Agile delivery activities including sprint planning, technical refinement and peer reviews
- Ensure engineering quality through testing, code reviews and continuous improvement practices
Required Experience
- 5–10 years’ experience as a Java Engineer within enterprise environments
- Strong hands-on experience with Java 11, Spring Boot and microservices architectures
- Strong AWS cloud experience
- Strong experience with Apache Kafka and asynchronous messaging/event-driven systems
- Strong understanding of ISO 20022 payments, payment flows and schemes
- Minimum 3 years’ hands-on experience implementing ICON IPF within banking environments
- Previous experience working directly with major banking or financial services clients
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively across both technical and non-technical teams
Desirable
- Experience within large-scale banking transformation programmes
- Exposure to high-volume transaction or real-time payments systems
- Experience working within Agile engineering environments
- Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices
