The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales, making operational decisions fairly and objectively. It sits at the heart of the criminal justice system, working with partners to help keep the public safe. The CPS is a National Organisation made up of over 7,000 people across England and Wales. Almost half of our employees are lawyers, responsible for deciding whether to prosecute cases, and who represent the Crown in many hearings in the courts. The CPS faces many challenges. most of which require joint working across the criminal justice system and with a complex and often high-profile range of stakeholders.
About the Digital Information Directorate
The Digital Information Directorate is made up of approximately 300 members of staff and has an overall budget of approximately £85 million. The goal of this directorate is to ensure that the infrastructure and systems that CPS relies on to function, are maintained and kept in a condition conducive to a successful working environment. Additionally, it is the driving force for digital transformation throughout the CPS, ensuring that the organisation is well positioned to harness new technologies to their greatest extent, resulting in the best service offering possible for the end user.
About the Role
As the Deputy Director of Digital, you will shape and drive our digital transformation at a national scale. You will lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of around 75 professionals across user centred design, engineering, delivery management and product management. Operating at the centre of the justice system, this role ensures that our digital services meet the highest standards, remaining secure, accessible and designed around the needs of users.
You will be responsible for the quality, performance and outcomes of all digital products and services within the CPS, overseeing prioritisation, risk and decision making across a complex and high impact portfolio, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and government policy. Through expertise in digital service delivery, agile methodologies and product management, you will provide the strategic direction needed to deliver user focused, future ready solutions that improve operational performance and strengthen public confidence in the criminal justice system.
As a senior member of the Digital and Technology leadership team, you will define and deliver the CPS digital vision and strategy while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will have:
- A proven ability to set and deliver a clear digital vision and strategy aligned with organisational priorities and measurable outcomes for users
- Extensive experience of leading large-scale digital transformation within complex organisations
- A deep commitment to designing user-centred, accessible and inclusive digital services, with a strong understanding of best practice and service standards
- A strong track record of embedding agile, iterative and product-based approaches in organisations with traditional delivery models
- Proven experience in product leadership, driving end-to-end product strategy, lifecycle management and delivery of high-impact digital products and services
- Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions that improve performance and outcomes
- Exceptional communication skills, able to build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders, delivery partners and frontline staff, to translate complex digital concepts for non-technical audiences
- Demonstrable experience of building, leading and inspiring large, diverse multi-disciplinary teams across digital, data and technology professions
- A strong understanding of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and their potential to improve user experience and organisational effectiveness
- Experience overseeing the end-to-end design, build and operation of digital products and services, ensuring timely, cost-effective delivery that meets user and policy needs
- The leadership qualities to drive collaboration, innovation and excellence across all digital disciplines, aligning with the wider priorities of the criminal justice system
