Infrastructure Engineer (Network)

Job summary

The Infrastructure Engineer is a key member of the Digital Services Infrastructure Team at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust. The role ensures the Trust's digital infrastructure operates securely, efficiently, and reliably across acute and community sites, supporting staff access to critical information and systems.

Core Responsibilities

  • Service Delivery: Provide infrastructure services in line with SLAs, resolving incidents and requests promptly.
  • System Management: Deploy, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot servers, networks, telephony, and related hardware/software.
  • Compliance & Security: Ensure infrastructure meets NHS security standards, DSPT Toolkit requirements, and Cyber Security guidelines.
  • Project Support: Contribute to technical projects and assist with upgrades, patching, and improvements.
  • Monitoring & Risk Reduction: Use proactive alerting tools to minimize downtime and maintain performance standards.
  • Technical Expertise: Possess specialist knowledge in Server/Storage and generalist knowledge across other infrastructure domains (Telecoms, Networking, or Architecture)

Additional Duties

  • Flexible working hours (8 am-6 pm coverage) and participation in on-call rota.
  • Manage team cover and collaborate with internal/external stakeholders.
  • Perform any other duties as reasonably required by the line manager

Main duties of the job

Operational Responsibilities

Deliver infrastructure services in line with SLAs.

Manage and maintain infrastructure systems for maximum availability, including redundancy and documentation.

Ensure systems, procedures, and documentation are accurate and regularly updated.

Configure, upgrade, patch, and troubleshoot servers, storage and security systems.

Monitor system performance, capacity, and connectivity, report findings to senior management.

Implement and maintain data backup strategies

Enforce security compliance and respond to NHS Digital CareCERT

Test changes before live deployment and follow Change Board process.

Identify and manage risks; maintain asset registers and capacity management processes.

Provide training and mentorship across teams.

Explore emerging technologies to enhance patient care.

Liaise with 3rd party suppliers and external stakeholders

Financial & Physical Resources

Ensure safe use and maintenance of infrastructure assets.

Analysis & Problem Solving

Perform diagnostics and root cause analysis using specialized tools.

Resolve issues efficiently and escalate when necessary.

Project Management

Support projects with technical expertise, risk management, and change control.

Communication

Explain complex technical concepts to non-technical staff.

Document and improve processes.

Information Resources

Assist in planning and implementing new infrastructure systems .

Research & Development

Promote innovation and horizon scanning for future technologies.

Person Specification

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent level of experience of working in a computer-based discipline or relevant subject
  • Appropriate certificated vendor training on maintaining the relevant specialism infrastructure system
  • Technical knowledge of Servers/Storage systems
  • ITIL Foundation qualification
Desirable
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Server qualification

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Essential
  • A high level of communication skills and ability to explain technical issues to a non-technical audience
  • Able to prioritise workload in response to changing demands
  • Documentation skills to a high standard
  • Knowledge of Active Directory, Backup, Patching and Support for Server systems
  • Knowledge of Storage systems
Desirable
  • Linux experience
  • Experience of Networking, Telecoms and Architecture
  • Experience of using a backup solution

Experience

Essential
  • Significant experience in effectively supporting a large scale, complex environment
  • Experience of working with thin client infrastructure and technologies
  • Working with 3rd parties
  • Good knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and messaging systems.
Desirable
  • Worked for other NHS trust
  • Experience of working in a SAN environment
