SQL Database Administrator - Role Summary
The SQL Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing management of SQL Server databases supporting critical clinical and financial systems across the organisation. This includes ensuring high availability, performance, security, and reliability of all database services.

Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, and maintain SQL databases, including replication, backup, restore, archiving, and reporting services.
- Install, patch, secure, and manage SQL Server environments (enterprise, clustered, and standard setups).
- Develop and enforce database policies, standards, and best practices for system support and maintenance.
- Monitor and optimise database performance through logging, indexing, collation, and system tuning.
- Manage backup strategies, recovery plans, and database maintenance schedules.
- Provide 24/7 operational support, making critical decisions to resolve database issues and maintain system availability.
- Translate business and user requirements into technical database solutions, including new designs and enhancements.
- Support change and release management processes in line with IT governance.
- Conduct data analysis and reporting on complex clinical and non-clinical datasets.
- Monitor system logs and contribute to preventive maintenance and system improvements.
- Collaborate across IT teams to maintain and enhance enterprise-wide database systems.

Person Specification
Education Qualification
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
- Substantial in-depth technical knowledge of complex database applications (e.g. such as Patient Administration and Clinical Information systems) preferably gained in a complex health care environment
- Microsoft SQL qualifications
- Masters degree
- ITIL Foundation qualification
- Presentation, Workflow or Office Automation Technologies
Experience
- Specific Microsoft SQl DBA Experience
- Experience of IT Clinical applications or equivalent
- Experience of working in a Prince2 (or similar) project management environment
- Experience of supporting IT applications in a large, complex organisations
- Experience of transitioning projects into a live environment
- Patient Record Systems or equivalent
- Experience of training both individuals or large groups of staff
Skills and Knowledge
- Able to use and deploy a range of diagnostic and analytical assessment tools
- Able to prioritise significant workloads and resource them in response to changing demands and requirements
- A high level of communication skills and ability to explain technical issues to a non-technical audience
- Documentation skills to a high standard
- Ability to explain to IT staff the user and service implications when problems arise
- Excellent understanding of confidentiality, the data protection act and data protection issues
- Able to deal confidently with 3rd party suppliers and build effective working relationships

- Flexibility is essential as some out of hours working and or On Call may be required to support the needs of the business
