Job summary
The Regional Communication Aid Service (RCAS) is a regional specialised service commissioned by NHS England. We provide specialised assessments and provision of communication equipment to adults and children across the North-East and North Cumbria who have complex communication needs.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Technologist to join the service on a full time basis.
You would be joining a supportive, multi-disciplinary team working across the region to help people achieve their goals. As a member of the technical team, you will support the assessment, provision and review of electronic communication aid equipment and mounting systems.
Main duties of the job
The role involves working with adults and children with with a range of disabilities. You will work both independently and as part of a team. You will work into a variety of community settings, including schools, homes, care homes and hospitals across the North East and North Cumbria region.
You will be involved in completing safety checks and preventative maintenance reviews of equipment.
You will contribute to equipment management and record keeping.
You will be involved in the equipment repair processes including troubleshooting technical problems, in line with skills and competencies.
You will provide technical advice, information, education and training to people, their families/carers, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
You will be part of equipment evaluation and seeking out new solutions, alongside senior technologists.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- Relevant BEng/BSc/HND/HNC or relevant experience to fulfil the knowledge requirements of the RCT and is a Registered Clinical Technologist/Healthcare Science Practitioner or equilalent significant experience. [If not currently registered, the post holder will be required to complete their RCT registration via the RCT equivalence route within their probationary period].
- Professional Engineering Registration e.g. Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (Registration with Engineering Council, IET).
Knowledge and Experience
- Knowledge and experience of the use and role of electronic assistive technology and benefits to service users
- Knowledge of risk assessment and other relevant procedures relating to the safe provision of equipment.
- Knowledge and understanding of confidentiality, clinical governance and audit.
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant standards, legislation and policies that apply to EAT, including MDR.
- Experience in the use of tools relevant to fault finding.
- Significant experience of electronic assistive technology, equipment maintenance and repair.
- Significant experience of fault finding in electronics and/or computing devices.
- Experience of risk assessment and other relevant procedures relating to the safe provision of equipment.
Skills and Competencies
- Competent in the use of electronics and computers.
- Practical engineering skills and manual dexterity.
- Able to configure electronic assistive technology.
- Able to produce technical drawings/specifications to support product manufacture.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Skills in training other staff in technical topics and the use of equipment.
- Advanced computer skills including the ability to customise electronic assistive technology.
- Fault finding skills relating to electronic assistive technology
- Able to carry out PAT testing of assistive technology systems
Other
- Enthusiastic about assistive technology and its application to clinical problems.
- Able to commute effectively and efficiently between service bases, work settings, patient homes and schools.
- Commitment to continuing professional development.
