Senior Systems Engineer

Location: Manchester Salary: Up to £60,000 (+on call options)Hours: 40 per week

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to take ownership of our on-premises and cloud infrastructure. You'll be responsible for maintaining and improving our core server, storage, networking and identity platforms, while driving stability, security, and efficiency across the environment.

You'll play a key role in shaping the future state of our systems landscape, supporting major projects, and providing senior-level technical guidance across the business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead administration and enhancement of Windows Server, Active Directory and identity services (including Azure AD).
  • Manage and improve system security, Group Policies, and access controls.
  • Support virtualisation platforms (VMware) and storage solutions.
  • Oversee firewalls (Fortinet), Wi-Fi infrastructure (Cambium), and general network operations.
  • Deliver 2nd/3rd line support across infrastructure and act as technical escalation point.
  • Contribute to architecture decisions and strategic infrastructure improvements.
  • Maintain monitoring, alerting and operational reliability using modern tooling.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 7+ years' experience in IT infrastructure roles.
  • Strong background in Microsoft technologies: Windows Server, AD, Azure AD, GPOs.
  • Experience with SCCM/SCOM or equivalent monitoring systems.
  • Knowledge of VMware vSphere/vCenter.
Preferred Experience
  • Exposure to Linux or macOS.
  • Experience with Azure or AWS cloud environments.
  • Understanding of networking, SAN, and data centre technologies.
  • PowerShell scripting and automation skills.
  • Certifications such as ITIL, MCITP, CCNA.
  • Microsoft 365 administration knowledge.
  • Experience with Agile delivery environments.
  • Familiarity with monitoring/SEIM platforms (PRTG, Sumo Logic).
