The Role

Were looking for a Backup Engineer to keep our customers mission-critical data protected, recoverable, and compliant so they can sleep at night. Youll monitor, maintain, and continuously improve our managed Backup as a Service (BaaS) environments, resolving incidents quickly and proactively preventing recurrences. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys troubleshooting across OS, application and network layers, and who communicates clearly with customers and colleagues.

The Responsibilities

• Proactively monitor customer backup jobs, health and capacity, responding to alerts and ensuring successful, verifiable backups and restores.
• Diagnose and resolve backup failures across Windows Server, virtualisation platforms, applications (e.g. MS SQL, Exchange, SharePoint) and networks (TCP/IP, routing, firewalls).
• Advise customers on backup best practice, retention and recovery testing; document runbooks and contribute to our knowledge base.
• Perform restore tests and live recoveries; validate RPO/RTOs and produce clear post-incident notes.
• Manage multiple cases concurrently in the service desk, providing timely updates and excellent customer communication.
• Collaborate with Sales/Account Management on feasibility questions and with Ops/Engineering on platform improvements.
• Participate in 1st-line call answering on a rotating basis and escalate appropriately to specialists.
• Join the on-call rota (after onboarding) to support out-of-hours incidents.

The Candidate will be:

• 35 years experience in technical support/operations with a strong focus on backup, recovery or data protection (managed services experience a plus).
• Solid knowledge in at least one of: Windows Server/Active Directory, VMware/Hyper-V, Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint.
• Comfortable with networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VLANs, VPNs) and diagnosing connectivity/performance issues impacting backups.
• Experienced with backup technologies (e.g. Veeam, Commvault, Backup Exec, Rubrik, Cohesity or similar).
• Confident communicator who can explain complex issues in plain English to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Detail-oriented, organised and calm under pressure; able to manage priorities across multiple customers.
• Curious, proactive problem-solver who documents well and continually looks for ways to improve reliability and speed of recover

Skills required

• Incident troubleshooting and root-cause analysis across OS, application and network layers.
• Scripting/automation basics (PowerShell preferred) to streamline routine tasks (nice to have).

• Experience with monitoring, ticketing and documentation tools; disciplined case and time management.
• Strong teamworkpartners effectively across Service Desk, Engineering, Sales and Customer teams.
• Willingness to learn, share knowledge and ask for help when needed.
