Our client is seeking an experienced Lead Technical Architect to join a well-established Cloud Platform team supporting a major Central Government programme. In this role, you will provide technical leadership across a complex AWS estate, shaping cloud architecture, strengthening governance and security, and driving the delivery of scalable, resilient platform solutions.

Working Patterns and location – Remote, potential UK travel ADHOC

The Key Responsibilities of a Lead Technical Architect:

• Lead the technical vision and architectural strategy for the Cloud Platform, ensuring alignment with business and programme objectives.

• Develop and enhance AWS organisational structures, including Organisational Units (OUs) and Service Control Policies (SCPs), to strengthen governance and compliance.

• Architect and deliver AWS Control Tower solutions and scalable landing zone frameworks to support platform growth.

• Drive improvements to account provisioning capabilities, increasing automation, consistency, and efficiency across onboarding processes.

• Lead the integration of AWS Identity Centre with Entra ID, enhancing identity management, JML processes, and privileged access controls.

• Champion FinOps best practices, enabling greater cost transparency, accountability, and optimisation across cloud services.

• Define, maintain, and enforce architectural standards, principles, and governance controls across the platform.

• Collaborate with technical teams and key stakeholders to support roadmap planning, technical decision-making, and cross-functional delivery.

Below is a list of Key Skills required for a Lead Technical Architect, however you will not be expected to have everything:

• Significant experience operating as a Lead Technical Architect within large-scale, complex AWS cloud environments.

• Strong expertise in AWS Control Tower, landing zone architecture, and AWS organisational design, including Organisational Units (OUs) and Service Control Policies (SCPs).

• Proven experience designing and implementing AWS Identity Centre solutions integrated with Entra ID.

• Thorough understanding of UK Government security requirements, cloud governance principles, and compliance frameworks.

• Demonstrated ability to develop, document, and communicate architectural standards, design patterns, and governance controls.

• Strong knowledge of FinOps methodologies, cloud cost optimisation, and financial governance within AWS environments.

• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.

• Experience evaluating and documenting architectural decisions, balancing factors such as security, cost, scalability, operational efficiency, and user experience.

The client would also like to see some of the below, but this is not essential:

• Prior experience delivering within Central Government environments or programmes aligned to Government Digital Service (GDS) standards.

• Good understanding of the SFIA framework, ideally operating at Level 5 or Level 6.

• Experience collaborating closely with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) teams to deliver and enhance shared cloud platforms.

• Relevant AWS certifications, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional and/or AWS Certified Security Specialty, would be highly advantageous.
