Main duties and responsibilities
The Directorate
The Digital and Technology Directorate plays a central role in reshaping how the university delivers digital value. We are modernising our services through cloud adoption, reduction of technical debt, and the implementation of a product operating model, still novel in higher education but increasingly vital to public sector innovation. Our approach combines agile delivery with operational excellence, ensuring services are both resilient and user focused. From AI and automation to endpoint management and cyber security, the Directorate is focused on creating future-ready services that support academic and professional excellence.
The Role
You will lead the design, implementation, and optimisation of hybrid cloud and on-premises platform infrastructure. They will ensure platform resilience, scalability, and IT security while mentoring other team members. The role will oversee delivery of key infrastructure projects, acting as a technical escalation point and ensuring successful delivery as well as the oversight of infrastructure monitoring, backup and disaster recovery.
Key responsibilities:
- Design, development and administration of scalable and resilient hybrid cloud platforms integrating legacy systems with cloud infrastructure that support the operation of modern applications
- Delivery of key infrastructure projects, private cloud integration, high performance compute configurations and a full infrastructure refresh investment in our on-premises element of our hybrid cloud configuration
Team structure:
- As part of the Digital and Technology Directorate, the role is a critical member of our Platforms and Connectivity team, the role will work closely with the university IT security, architecture and data teams who deliver a diverse portfolio of technology projects.
The Ideal Candidate
- Essential skills and experience:
- Extensive experience in managing and maintaining complex IT platforms, pipelines, and infrastructure. Key technologies are, servers (Windows/Linux), Virtualization (VMware) storage (NetApp) and IT security across a large-scale, business-critical environment.
- Advanced technical experience of cloud platforms and hybrid cloud infrastructure, including deployment, management, and integration with on premise systems. Ideally Microsoft Azure
- Proven track record in the design, implementation, and management of secure, scalable platform services, including both on-premises and cloud- based infrastructures, with a focus on resilience, performance and security.
- Desired skills and experience:

- Experience leading platform-related projects from concept to delivery, including requirements gathering, solution design, testing, deployment, and post-implementation support, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and KPIs.
- Demonstrated experience in service monitoring and performance optimisation, proactively identifying areas for improvement and making necessary adjustments to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) deployments and configuration management using tools such as Terraform & Bicep.
- Experience of working within Higher Education sector
- Technical understanding of network technologies
