Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Platform for Cloud to lead our infrastructure engineering teams. This pivotal role will oversee the implementation and operational management of both our cloud platforms and on-premises technologies, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and secure. With a current hybrid configuration and an ambitious migration plan over the next three years, this is a truly exciting time to join DHCW and lead a large infrastructure-focused engineering team of over 30 staff.   • Proven experience and knowledge of on-premises infrastructure and cloud platform (Azure and GCP) management and architecture.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Compassionate leader, embracing the mentoring role, and supporting career pathways
  • In depth understanding of ITSM processes for managing operational teams
  • Understanding, experience, and desire to streamline through automation and use of Infrastructure as Code (IAC).
  • Skilled at both reviewing and developing complex technical and business level documents

Main duties of the job

In this role, your main duties will be as follows

o Serve as subject matter expert for multiple engineering disciplines and escalation point for the team.

o Lead and manage resources, including recruitment and discipline issues.

o Work with senior infrastructure leadership to design, implement, and operate services.

o Plan and oversee major budgets.

o Ensure KPIs are met, services are continually optimised, resilient, cyber improved and maintain technical documentation.

o Actively participate, align with audit processes such as ISO27001.

o Implement new services with best practice, approved by Technical Design Authority Group, providing constructive feedback as appropriate.

o Manage installation and resilience testing of cloud and on premises infrastructure.

o Identify, manage, and mitigate operational risks, including options papers for complex risks.

o Effectively manage assets and lifecycle of infrastructure.

o Represent department, directorate, or business in wider meetings inside and outside NHS Wales.

  • Lead the implementation and operational management of DHCW's cloud platforms and on-premise technologies
  • Be an integral part of the transition programme from on premises to cloud
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement cloud solutions that meet organizational needs.
  • Ensure the security, reliability, and scalability of cloud infrastructure and on-premise technologies.
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation in cloud services, through automating and optimisation.
  • Manage multiple vendor relationships
  • Mentor and develop a high-performing Infrastructure engineering team.
  • Develop career pathways and align training to the career pathway to support existing staff

Qualifications

Essential
  • Master's degree in an associated professional field (or equivalent qualification / experience).
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
Desirable
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of the NHS, including the political, strategic and operational environment in which it operates

Experience

Essential
  • Extensive specialist knowledge and experience of leading successful teams in a large and complex organisation, with responsibility for managing enterprise-wide digital services
  • Experience of managing major operational issues, effectively resolving problems and mitigating risks.
  • Proficient in the IT products supplied to internal and external customers by the organisation (Public cloud - Azure / GCP resource, on premise - VMWare, Hyper V, SQL, Windows, Linux
  • Experience of budget forecasting and managing significant budgets

Skills and Attributes

Essential
  • Leadership skills to clearly articulate goals and objectives and motivate and lead others towards their achievement.
  • Influence, persuasion and personal impact skills to convey a level of confidence and professionalism when engaging with stakeholders, influencing positively and persuading others to take a specific course of action.
Desirable
  • Welsh language skills are desirable, at level 1 or above
