A Senior DevOps Engineer supports the development, integration, and operation of software, delivering and maintaining a complete DevOps toolchain to enable effective product delivery. As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will:
- Ensure DevOps services are scalable, resilient, and aligned with business needs.
- Drive continuous improvement through mentoring, training, and fostering collaboration.
- Safeguard systems and processes with secure-by-design principles and compliance standards.
- Champion Agile and user-centred approaches to deliver effective solutions.
- Maintain operational readiness, cost-effectiveness, and observability across systems.
- Provide leadership in resolving blockers, guiding teams, and ensuring delivery quality.
- Communicate strategies and technical concepts clearly to stakeholders at all levels.
Main duties of the job
A Senior DevOps Engineer supports the development, integration, and operation of software, delivering and maintaining a complete DevOps toolchain to enable effective product delivery. As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will:
o Take ownership of complex DevOps initiatives, making independent decisions to deliver effective solutions.
o Plan and design groups of user stories, translating technical requirements into an effective DevOps toolchain to enable product delivery.
o Promote best practices, standards, and innovation across DevOps delivery to ensure high-quality, secure, and efficient services.
o Design and implement infrastructure solutions, ensuring deployment strategies are repeatable, scalable, and highly available.
o Provide coaching and mentoring to colleagues, sharing technical expertise and supporting delivery teams in solving complex problems.
o Apply a logical, analytical approach to problem solving, maintaining close attention to detail.
o Use agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, using the right standards and tools.
o Identify, locate and fix complex service faults, escalating issues when necessary to maintain reliable operations.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
- Master's-level qualification, or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant technical or professional field such as DevOps engineering, infrastructure, or software delivery.
- Practical understanding of DevOps principles and practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automation, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Hands-on experience with coding standards, version control, automated testing, and deployment processes.
- Operational knowledge of IT infrastructure, cloud services, and virtualisation, including configuration, monitoring, and basic security controls
- A commitment to continuous professional development.
- Registered IT Technician (RITTech) or an alternative relevant IT/professional registration.
- FEDIP Senior Practitioner, or equivalent recognised Advanced Professional qualification.
- Theoretical and specialist knowledge gained via relevant certification such as: oEXIN DevOps Professional
- Knowledge of the NHS, other healthcare systems, or the health sector, including regional or national variations.
Experience
- Experience working in a technical role within a complex environment, contributing to the coordination of technical resources and supporting the prioritisation of delivery activities.
- Familiar with applying DevOps practices and automation to support secure, reliable, and high-quality code delivery from development to live services.
- Proficient in writing and maintaining code to support CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and automation, translating requirements into functional software.
- Proficient in implementing and managing IT infrastructure, networks, and systems across on-premises and cloud environments.
- Familiar with mitigating security threats and vulnerabilities across hardware, software, and infrastructure, including implementing basic controls and supporting incident response.
- Proficient in supporting the build, test, and deployment of software releases, including handling non-conformance and release acceptance under guidance.
- Proficient in using incident management tools to record, track, and analyse incidents, identify trends, and manage known errors.
- Familiar with quality assurance methods and techniques, including planning, evaluation, configuration management, and supporting quality reviews and audits.
- Proficient in coaching or supporting others to develop skills, improve performance, and adopt modern practices.
- Proficient in engaging with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, adapting communication and collaboration approaches to achieve shared goals.
- Familiar with supporting budget preparation and monitoring to manage costs effectively and ensure value for money.
- Familiar with conducting structured reviews of test plans, business cases, architectures, and other key deliverables.
- Experience using AI and machine learning technologies to support DevOps processes and data-informed decision-making.
- Proficient in tracking project progress to meet deadlines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Familiar with cloud, virtualisation, and infrastructure principles, including networks, systems, application, and data layers, with security and management of virtualised environments.
- Proficient in Agile methods and practices and able to apply them within DevOps teams to support iterative delivery and continuous improvement.
