Head of Commercial Finance

Head of Commercial Finance x 2

Two newly created roles

£85,000 to £95,000 plus 10% bonus and benefits

Hybrid, with one day a week in the office

The business

Two roles. Same business. Both brand new. And both genuinely worth a look.

This is a profitable, well established technology group with a lot going for it.

Good margins, strong cash generation, a healthy balance sheet and a growth story that still has plenty left in it.

They have grown both organically and through acquisition, and now operate across multiple divisions, products and international markets. That growth has created the need for more commercial finance support close to the leadership teams.

These roles are not replacements. They are being created because the business is growing and finance is becoming even more embedded in the decisions that matter.

You will not be tucked away reporting on what happened last month.

You will be close to the divisional leadership teams, helping shape where money is invested, which opportunities are worth chasing and how the business continues to grow profitably.

The roles

Both roles report into the CFO and support different divisions of the same group. The divisions have different markets, different products and different commercial challenges, but the brief is broadly the same.

Be the commercial finance lead. Own the numbers. Challenge the thinking. Help the business make better decisions.

There are no direct reports at this stage, so these are not “manage from a distance” roles. You’ll need to be senior enough to influence the conversation, but still happy getting into the detail, building the model and challenging the assumptions yourself.

What you’ll be doing

The work will be broad. Budgeting, forecasting, strategic planning, performance analysis, investment modelling, pricing, commercial decision support and supporting business cases for new opportunities.

There will also be exposure to M&A and due diligence activity, but that is not the whole role. The bigger piece is helping the business make better decisions day to day.

That could mean looking at the performance of a product or service portfolio, testing the financial case for a new investment, understanding where margin is being won or lost, or helping leadership think through different scenarios before committing time, money and resource.

What they’re looking for

The best fit is likely to be someone who has worked in a larger, more complex business. That could be PE backed, group structured, international or another environment where finance is close to commercial decision making.

You do not need to come from this exact sector. What matters more is that you can show proper commercial finance experience. Someone who has been close to pricing, investment decisions, business cases, commercial modelling, growth planning or performance improvement.

SaaS, software, tech enabled services, digital products, B2B services, consumer tech, subscriptions or product-led businesses could all translate well.

They will want to see someone who can partner senior stakeholders, challenge assumptions without making it difficult, turn data into clear recommendations and understand what really drives revenue, margin, cash and profitability.

The fit

This is probably not right for someone who wants a pure reporting role. It is also not right for someone who needs a lot of structure around them.

It is much better suited to someone who enjoys being close to the action, likes figuring things out and can bring a bit of commercial common sense to decisions that are not always black and white.

Package

Salary is between £85,000 and £95,000 depending on the role and experience.

There is also a 10% bonus, private health and dental, pension matched up to 8%, life assurance, 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, gifted shares when you join and flexible hybrid working.
