Construction Legal Counsel
Our client is a leading Mechanical and Electrical contractor based in London. From massive data centres to complex infrastructure and commercial landmarks, they deliver the high-value engineering solutions that keep the UK running.
As a result of continued business growth my client has a newly created opportunity on offer a commercially-minded Construction Solicitor looking to move closer to the "front line" of iconic engineering projects. You will be a strategic partner to their bid teams and project managers, providing the legal "guardrails" which will allow the business to scale safely and successfully.
Responsibilities
- Drive the Deal: Review, draft, and negotiate complex construction contracts (JCT/NEC4), sub-contracts, and professional appointments.
- Be the Project Partner: Act as the primary legal point of contact during the construction phase—advising on EOTs, payment notices, and variations.
- Mitigate Risk: Identify potential disputes early and implement pragmatic strategies to avoid formal litigation.
- Influence Strategy: Provide risk-based advice directly to the senior leadership team on high-value tenders.
Qualifications
Successful candidates must be a qualified Solicitor (UK) with a robust background in construction law (ideally 3–6+ years PQE, though Contract Managers with thorough Construction are open to all experienced applicants).
Required Skills
- Contractual Mastery: Deep knowledge of JCT (Design & Build, Standard) and NEC4/NEC3 (Options A, B, and C).
- Sector Savvy: Experience within or for large-scale contractors/subcontractors. Understanding the specific nuances of M&E risks is a massive plus.
- Communication: The ability to translate complex legal jargon into actionable commercial advice for non-legal stakeholders.
*Familiarity with FIDIC, experience in Adjudication, or previous in-house/secondment experience would be advantageous.*
