At E.ON, we’re leading the transition to a low-carbon future. Our Energy Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) team designs, builds, operates, and maintains district heating and local energy networks across the UK — helping cities, communities, and businesses decarbonise their energy use.

As a Network and Communication Engineer, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining and improving the digital backbone of our district heating networks. You’ll make sure our sites and assets are visible to our Control Centre, securely connected, and performing efficiently — ensuring our customers enjoy continuous service and accurate billing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and continuously improve the data communication and digital networking infrastructure across our heat networks.
  • Provide 2nd line technical support for digital and operational technology systems.
  • Carry out reactive and planned maintenance activities, both remotely and on-site, following the maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Strengthen and maintain the cyber security posture of our operational technology and digital infrastructure.
  • Support improvements to plant performance and system reliability through technical insight and data analysis.
  • Provide local hands-on support for the managed service provider within the boundaries of agreed activities defined by the service contract/service definition.
  • Work with E.ON service management team in the management, measurement and review of the against service SLA’s/KPI’s and associated service definition commitments.
  • Assist in scheduling maintenance to optimise resources and minimise downtime.
  • Configure Layer 2 and 3 network switches, firewalls, and IP networks for adopted assets.
  • Develop and maintain digital monitoring systems and cloud-based configurations (VPN, firewall, network monitoring).
  • Oversee large-scale VPN network performance and connectivity.
  • Conduct GSM/LTE surveys, configuration, and failover testing.
  • Supervise on-site contractors and ensure safe, compliant delivery of work.
  • Produce technical documentation, internal engineering standards, and reports to support projects and incidents.
  • Participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota to support operational continuity.
What we need from you
  • Proven experience in network engineering, digital infrastructure, or operational technology (OT) environments.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites across the UK, with flexibility to participate in an on-call rota for out-of-hours support.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive and safety-conscious approach.
  • Electrical experience and working with structured cabling.
  • IOSH (Working Safely) or equivalent qualification in health and safety.
  • Hands-on experience configuring routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Knowledge of Layer 2/3 networking, LAN/WAN architecture, cloud networking (e.g., AWS, Azure), and wireless system.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring tools to analyse network performance and troubleshoot issues.
  • Experience with maintenance and fault resolution, both remote and on-site.

It would be great if you had

  • Experience within the energy, utilities, or district heating sectors.
  • Awareness of cyber security principles for operational and industrial systems
