Biomedical Scientist in Medical Microbiology
Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic, visionary Specialist Biomedical Scientists in Microbiology (Band 6) to join our dynamic and thriving team. The Microbiology service is a UKAS ISO 15189; 2022 accredited laboratory based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and serves within the Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN). Microbiology has a strong training ethos linked to career development and progression.
Applicants should be effective leaders, have significant Microbiology knowledge and experience, and have a good track record of managing staff and laboratory resources. You must be able to demonstrate achievement of targets, of implementing service developments and service transformation initiatives, a high attention to detail and excellent communication skills.

Main duties of the job
The suitable candidate must be HCPC registered and hold, or be working towards, an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology.
Job Purpose:
To undertake scientific tasks within all appropriate sections of the department as delegated by Senior staff including when appropriate, monitoring the performance of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and (S)AHCS.
To process laboratory samples and produce timely, accurate and relevant results and reports in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
To undertake routine analytical work involving both automated and manual techniques.
To make timely and accurate decisions regarding the efficient and safe functioning of the laboratories considering health and safety and other relevant legislation.
Develop and implement systems and procedures within the Department to enable the service to run effectively, and to ensure it complies with legal requirements.
Assist in service developments including evaluation of new assays.
The postholder will be expected to use initiative in all areas of work.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
- Health & care Professions Council registration as a Biomedical Scientist
- Institute of Biomedical Science accredited BSc Hons degree or equivalent
- IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or Virology or equivalent or higher qualification
Skills and Experience
- Evidence of experience of a range of techniques used across all subdisciplines of Microbiology
- Evidence of experience of ISO 15189:2022 and related quality methodologies, ability to train junior staff members, and work with a positive Health and Safety mindset
- Post-registration experience in specialist theoretical & practical clinical diagnostic Bacteriology, or Virology/Serology
- IT skills - LIMs, middleware, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to work as part of a team & develop effective relationships but also to work on own initiative
- Good communication skills, both oral & written
- Experience of working in a Microbiology Laboratory
- Evidence of good leadership skills
- Experience in theoretical and practical diagnostic Parasitology, Mycology and Molecular techniques
- Experience working in an NHS laboratory
Knowledge
- Specialist knowledge of biomedical science & clinical diagnostic bacteriology, virology/serology, Parasitology and Molecular techniques
- Knowledge of recent advances in Medical Microbiology and impacts these may have on diagnostic processes
- In process of completing Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology
- Have Postgraduate qualification in a Microbiology related subject
- Knowledge of training, learning and development processes
