Job summary
You're invited to apply for the Junior Cloud Software/Infrastructure Engineer role at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, as part of the EPSRC-funded Team Development Hub Project. In this role, you'll receive training and support through an emerging curriculum and competency framework that will help you develop new skills to support the development, maintenance, and optimisation of a real-world secure data environment (SDE).
This role is one of three Research Technical Professional (RTP) positions supported by the Team Development Hub project across the partner institutions: the University of Liverpool, the University of Manchester, and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
You'll bring enthusiasm and a proactive mindset to a project focused on delivering next-generation training materials. These materials aim to equip future RTPs--like yourself--with a broad range of skills in emerging technologies such as Kubernetes, Terraform, and Azure Cloud, which form the foundation of modern SDE infrastructure.
With your commitment to excellent customer service and your passion for science and engineering, you'll work in an agile technical environment alongside infrastructure engineers, software developers, data analysts, and academic researchers. Together, you'll provision new SDE infrastructure and help develop an innovative training curriculum to benefit the wider RTP community.

As a Junior Cloud Software/Infrastructure Engineer, you will assist in deploying and managing Kubernetes clusters that support the organisation's analytics platform. Working closely with senior engineers, you will help implement and integrate cloud solutions--primarily within Azure and AWS environments.
Your responsibilities will include monitoring and maintaining containerized applications to ensure performance and availability, supporting automation efforts through CI/CD pipelines, and troubleshooting technical issues related to Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure.
You'll also contribute to ensuring the security and compliance of cloud environments by following best practices and internal policies. Clear documentation of processes and configurations will be an essential part of your work.
Additionally, you will participate in team meetings, contribute to project planning, engage with stakeholders to gather requirements and provide technical support, and stay informed on emerging technologies and best practices in Kubernetes and cloud computing.

Assist in the deployment and management of Kubernetes clusters to support our analytics platform.
Collaborate with senior engineers to implement and integrate cloud solutions, primarily using Azure and AWS.

Support the automation of deployment processes using CI/CD pipelines.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Education
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science or related field
- Understanding of health informatics, clinical data, or medical research methodologies.
Knowledge and Experience
- Experience in software development using languages such as Python, R, Java, or C++.
- Basic knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and containerization (e.g., Docker).
- Familiarity with version control systems (Git/GitHub/GitLab) and software development best practices.
- Familiarity with databases (SQL, PostgreSQL, NoSQL) and data integration techniques.
- Understanding of data governance, GDPR, and cybersecurity principles.
- Experience with public cloud platforms
- Experience with Dev Ops tooling and activities
- Experience with data privacy regulations such as GDPR and NHS Data Security Standards.
- Experience and/or knowledge of containerisation platform
- Experience working with Linux
- Exposure to secure computing environments and cybersecurity principles.
- Exposure to DevOps practices, containerization (Docker), or orchestration (Kubernetes).
