Principal Audio Engineer

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Principal Audio Software Engineer to join a highly innovative engineering team, leading the development of advanced audio processing technologies for next-generation handheld communication products.

This role performs the duties of leading real-time audio software development and DSP innovation, and reports to senior engineering leadership within the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architect, design and implement real-time audio processing algorithms and DSP pipelines
  • Develop technologies including noise reduction, acoustic echo cancellation, beamforming, VAD, audio enhancement and custom codecs
  • Ensure solutions meet strict performance, latency, stability and reliability requirements for mission-critical use
  • Act as technical authority for audio software, guiding design decisions and engineering standards
  • Lead technical reviews, mentor engineers and support cross-functional teams
  • Drive long-term architectural evolution of audio subsystems
  • Collaborate with embedded, hardware, systems and acoustics teams for seamless integration
  • Support full product lifecycle from concept through to testing, tuning and verification
  • Conduct performance analysis, debugging and optimisation across platforms
  • Develop automated testing and validation tools
  • Ensure compliance with relevant communication and safety standards
  • Research emerging DSP techniques and contribute to innovation, including patents and technical documentation

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Experience within mission-critical or safety-critical communication systems
  • Knowledge of TETRA, DMR, LTE or similar communication standards
  • Experience using MATLAB or Python for algorithm development
  • Understanding of microphone arrays, beamforming and acoustic systems
  • Experience with ARM architectures, RTOS or multi-core optimisation
  • Exposure to machine learning-based audio processing techniques

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Audio Engineering, DSP or related field
  • Proven experience developing real-time audio software or DSP algorithms
  • Deep understanding of DSP techniques such as AEC, noise reduction, AGC, beamforming and filtering
  • Strong C/C++ programming skills for embedded or real-time systems
  • Experience optimising software for low latency and resource-constrained environments
  • Strong debugging, analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Ability to lead complex technical projects end-to-end
