Data Engineering Manager
Data Engineering Manager
Fully Remote (UK-based)
Salary: £85,000 – £115,000
Our global fintech client is on a mission to transform how large-scale financial transaction data is processed, reconciled, and trusted. They are now seeking an experienced Data Engineering Manager to lead a high-impact team responsible for building and scaling a mission-critical regulatory and transaction data platform.
This is a hands-on leadership role with significant autonomy, where you will shape data strategy, build compliant data processes, and lead the evolution toward a modern cloud-based data platform.
The Opportunity
You will lead a small but highly capable team (2–3 engineers) at the heart of a fast-growing fintech platform. The team is currently mid-way through a major platform realignment, migrating from legacy Oracle EPM solutions to a modern Snowflake / DBT / Airflow-based data platform.
This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, financial compliance, and auditability. You will play a key role in ensuring the organisation can meet strict regulatory safeguarding requirements, demonstrating to regulators that merchant funds are always accounted for and available.
Success in this role requires someone who is:
- Detail-oriented and thoughtful, with a strong appreciation for financial data accuracy
- Comfortable operating in audit-heavy environments (multiple audits per year)
- Able to defend data solutions clearly to auditors and stakeholders
- A strong leader who can balance delivery, team leadership, and hands-on engineering
Role Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and motivate a small, high-performing data engineering team
- Manage day-to-day team operations within an Agile Scrum environment (2–3 week sprints)
- Provide clear direction, remove blockers, and ensure delivery against sprint goals
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Delivery & Execution
- Own and drive delivery of a clearly defined data engineering roadmap
- Ensure consistent progress against project milestones, deadlines, and regulatory requirements
- Communicate status updates, risks, and roadblocks clearly to stakeholders
- Work closely with product, delivery, and business teams to align on priorities
Hands-On Engineering
- Design and build scalable, resilient data pipelines and data warehouse solutions
- Contribute directly to engineering work, setting technical standards by example
- Develop and enhance ETL/ELT pipelines supporting reconciliation and safeguarding use cases
- Build robust, compliant data processes aligned with regulatory standards
What You will Be Working On
- Migration from legacy systems (Oracle EPM) to a modern Snowflake + DBT + Airflow data platform
- Development of an autonomous data warehouse supporting audit and compliance reporting (Omni)
- Building data processes that underpin regulatory safeguarding requirements
- Designing systems capable of passing frequent external audits
- Expanding use of AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g., Claude Code) and driving adoption across the team
What You will Bring (Must-Have)
- 8+ years in data engineering, with 3+ years in leadership or management roles
- Proven experience managing small engineering teams in delivery-focused environments
- Strong expertise in SQL and relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MSSQL, Snowflake)
- Hands-on experience building data pipelines and data warehouse solutions (DW modelling)
- Solid experience with Snowflake and DBT
- Practical knowledge of CI/CD tooling (GitLab, Jenkins, or similar)
- Experience in regulated financial environments (payments, reconciliation, safeguarding)
- Ability to design data solutions and confidently articulate and defend them to auditors
- Strong stakeholder communication skills, including translating technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Experience working in Agile Scrum environments
Nice to Have
- Experience with Java (medium proficiency) or Groovy
- Python scripting experience
- Familiarity with Oracle Cloud infrastructure
- Exposure to Oracle EPM (can be learned)
- Experience with microservices or JVM-based systems
- Experience leveraging AI tools (e.g., Claude Code) in software development workflows
Key Traits for Success
- Highly detail-oriented with a strong focus on data accuracy and integrity
- Comfortable working under strict regulatory and audit requirements
- Strong decision-making skills — able to walk through data solutions and trade-offs clearly
- Ability to operate autonomously and own both technical and delivery outcomes
- Passion for building scalable, future-proof data platforms
Why Join?
- Fully remote role – work from anywhere in the UK (must have permanent right to work)
- Opportunity to lead a business-critical compliance and safeguarding platform
- High autonomy — shape your roadmap and execution approach
- Work on a modern data platform transformation at scale
- Collaborative culture with strong respect, open communication, and shared ownership
- Influence strategy across technology, product, and business in a global fintech
