Automation Engineer
I’m working with a well-established manufacturing business in Barnsley that is continuing to invest heavily in automation, robotics and new production technology. They are looking for a Automation Engineer to join the team and play a key role in modernising manufacturing processes, introducing new technology and delivering measurable improvements across production.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys being close to the shop floor and taking automation projects from initial concept through to installation, commissioning and optimisation.
The role
As Automation Engineer, you will identify opportunities to improve manufacturing operations through automation, robotics and process optimisation.
You will be involved in:
- Identifying and delivering automation opportunities across manufacturing.
- Leading the installation, commissioning and integration of robotic and automated systems.
- Developing and optimising robot programmes and PLC-controlled processes.
- Supporting the introduction of new manufacturing technology and equipment.
- Carrying out cost-benefit analysis and supporting capital investment decisions.
- Working on NPI projects and manufacturing process improvements.
- Using data, Lean and continuous improvement methodologies to improve efficiency, quality and output.
- Working closely with production, engineering and other internal teams to deliver projects.
Automation Engineer Skillset:
The ideal Manufacturing Automation Engineer will have a strong background in production or manufacturing engineering, ideally gained within an automotive Tier 1, FMCG or similarly complex manufacturing environment.
You should have:
- At least 3+ years' manufacturing or production engineering experience.
- Strong experience with automation, robotics and PLC-controlled systems.
- Experience delivering NPI projects.
- Knowledge of APQP, PFMEA, Six Sigma and SPC.
- Understanding of manufacturing process design, cell layout and material flow.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement.
- Experience managing multiple engineering projects.
- Knowledge of CAD, ideally AutoCAD.
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.
You'll also need to be a strong problem solver with the ability to manage projects, influence stakeholders and work effectively across different teams.
