Electrical Engineer - Distribution Networks (Operations)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer with operational experience working on UK Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and private electricity networks. Applicants for full or part time roles will be welcome. The successful candidate will support the site technical audits, design, operation, maintenance, and delivery of HV and LV electrical distribution projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety legislation, and ESQCR and DNO requirements. The successful applicant would be required to travel around the UK as work dictates.
The role requires a strong understanding of electricity distribution systems, network operations, fault management, and asset maintenance across voltage levels up to 11/33 kV (desirable 132kV).
Key Responsibilities
- Support the operation, maintenance, and development of electrical distribution networks.
- Provide technical expertise on LV, 11kV, 33kV, and 132kV network assets.
- Where required, plan, coordinate, and oversee network outages and switching operations.
- Produce and review electrical designs, calculations, and technical specifications.
- Undertake network studies, fault level assessments, and load flow analysis.
- Where required, participate in fault investigations, root cause analysis, and network restoration activities.
- Ensure compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations, ESQCR, DNO policies, and industry standards.
- Review and approve contractor work and engineering documentation.
- Assist with asset management, condition assessments, and network reinforcement projects.
- Support emergency response activities and operational incident investigations.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
- Maintain accurate records, engineering reports, and project documentation.
Essential Requirements
- HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience working on UK electricity distribution networks.
- Strong operational knowledge of DNO network assets and procedures.
- Experience with HV and LV distribution systems up to 132kV.
- Knowledge of network switching, isolation, and permit-to-work systems.
- Understanding of G81, ENA Engineering Recommendations, and DNO standards.
- Experience of fault finding, network restoration, and maintenance activities.
- Knowledge of electrical protection systems and distribution plant.
- Familiarity with health and safety legislation applicable to utility operations.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Requirements
- Authorised Person or Senior Authorised Person experience ( the successful applicant will not be required to be Authorised under distribution safety rules)
- Competence in HV switching and operational procedures.
- Experience working within a DNO, IDNO, ICP, or utility contractor environment.
- Knowledge of connection agreements and distribution network planning.
- Membership of a professional institution such as the IET.
- Working towards or holding Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Experience Profile
The ideal candidate will have several years of operational experience on UK DNO electricity networks, including involvement in network operations, switching activities, maintenance planning, fault response, and delivery of distribution projects across LV, 11kV, 33kV and potentially 132kV systems. Experience working closely with DNO control rooms, field operations teams, and network planners would be highly advantageous.
