Data Engineer

About The Role

FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Senior Data Engineer to work for our client within the Public Sector (Central Government) sector. This is initially a 6 month contract with very good prospects to extend and will be a hybrid role that will be based in Croydon, Salford or Liverpool.

Our client is investing in its data and reporting capability. As a Senior Data Engineer you will drive the design and delivery of data flows that connect operational systems to analytics and business intelligence platforms, leading a small team of Data Engineers to deliver new hybrid datasets, improve existing models and remove barriers to critical business information that supports Ministers, the Executive Committee and operational leads.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build and test data products from multiple source system feeds using a range of storage technologies and access methods.
  • Develop and maintain ETL processes and data models, including reverse engineering data models from live systems.
  • Undertake data profiling and source system analysis, presenting clear insights to colleagues to support the end use of data.
  • Monitor and improve data quality in source systems, working with data privacy and information security teams to embed security by design.
  • Line manage and lead a small team of Data Engineers, supporting their development and resolving delivery blockers.

About You

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience delivering data analysis projects, solution design and end user reporting.
  • Strong T-SQL development skills (Azure Data Studio, MS SQL Server Management Studio or Azure Synapse) and cloud-based data integration (Azure Synapse Analytics).
  • Experience with data engineering and analysis tooling such as Advanced MS Excel, MS Access and SAP Business Objects, plus coding via VBA, Python and/or R.
  • Sound understanding of data modelling techniques and database design, with the ability to elicit and communicate user requirements.
  • Experience of line management or project delivery through others. SC clearance is essential (ideally already held).
