Java Full Stack Developer
About the Role
We are hiring a Java Full Stack Developer to join a major digital transformation programme for a central UK government department. This initiative will enhance and modernise the UK's next-generation biometric capabilities, replacing Legacy technologies and integrating with multiple government systems.
You will work within a multidisciplinary Agile team, contributing to the design and development of secure, scalable, and high-performing solutions. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a large-scale, mission-critical public sector programme with a leading digital services provider.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop high-quality Back End and full-stack solutions using Java and AWS.
- Build and maintain Spring Boot microservices and REST APIs.
- Develop simulators and components as part of the end-to-end solution.
- Write robust JUnit tests and participate in code reviews.
- Work with DevOps practices including Git, Jenkins, CI/CD, and containerisation.
- Collaborate within an Agile team, contributing to sprint planning, retrospectives, and continuous improvement.
- Troubleshoot issues, optimise performance, and ensure best-practice standards across SDLC.
Essential Skills
- Strong hands-on development experience with Java 8+
- Experience with Spring Framework/Spring Boot
- Writing unit tests using JUnit
- Experience with PostgreSQL or other relational databases
- Hands-on experience with Git, Jenkins, CI/CD
- Solid understanding of microservices architecture
- Working knowledge of AWS services (ECS, EKS, S3, SQS)
- Experience building and consuming REST APIs
- Understanding of Kubernetes
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Docker and containerised development
- JavaScript frameworks (preferably ReactJS or NodeJS)
- AWS API Gateway and Serverless technologies
- Apache Kafka or other messaging brokers
- BPM frameworks
- Mustache templates
- Experience with large-scale integration and distributed systems
- ELK stack experience
- OpenStack platform exposure
- Agile/Scrum, TDD experience
