Web Developer (PHP & WordPress)
ABOUT FARLO
Farlo is a digital agency specialising in data-driven UX, technical SEO and high-performance WordPress platforms, with deep expertise in live events, theatre and ticketing.
We design, build and operate large-scale, content-rich websites used by millions of users, integrating closely with external ticketing, CRM and analytics systems. Our work is long-term, platform-focused and performance-critical - not throwaway campaign sites.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a mid-level WordPress/PHP Developer to support and evolve two flagship, high-traffic ticketing and content platforms operating at national and international scale.
You will have a primary platform focus, while also working across both platforms as needed to:
- Share knowledge and best practice
- Support continuity and resilience
- Help direct effort toward the areas that need it most
This is a hands-on, day-to-day development role, focused on maintaining, improving and extending complex WordPress ecosystems that must remain stable, fast and reliable under heavy traffic.
You'll work closely with senior developers, technical SEO, UX and project management, but will be trusted to own tasks end-to-end, make sensible technical decisions, and keep critical platforms running smoothly.
Hybrid working applies, with one day per week in our Fitzrovia office.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Day-to-day development and maintenance of large, high-traffic WordPress platforms
- Building and maintaining custom WordPress themes, plugins and Gutenberg blocks
- Implementing new page templates, content features and campaign requirements
- Supporting and extending integrations with external systems (ticketing, APIs, feeds)
- Maintaining performance, stability and security on live production sites
- Debugging production issues quickly and safely
- Collaborating with UX, SEO and PMs to deliver well-scoped, robust solutions
- Improving CMS workflows for internal content and marketing teams
- Writing clean, maintainable, standards-compliant PHP and frontend code
- Contributing to shared platform knowledge and documentation
CORE REQUIREMENTS
- 3+ years professional PHP development
- Strong experience building custom WordPress themes and plugins
- Extensive experience with ACF (Advanced Custom Fields)
- Deep familiarity with WordPress core, hooks, filters and template hierarchy
- Practical experience with Gutenberg / block-based builds
- Confidence translating Figma designs into accurate, performant templates
- Solid understanding of technical SEO and performance optimisation
- Ability to debug PHP, JavaScript and frontend issues using browser dev tools
- Experience working with Git / GitHub in a team environment
- Familiarity with Cloudflare, hosting environments and deployment workflows
- Comfortable working on live, business-critical websites
- Ability to manage your own workload, communicate clearly, and hit deadlines
- High attention to detail - mistakes on these platforms are very visible
- Willingness to follow and contribute to shared in-house code standards
DESIRABLE (NOT ESSENTIAL)
- Experience working on ticketing, live events or high-traffic content platforms
- Exposure to Bedrock / Roots-based WordPress architectures
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Github Actions, Azure DevOps)
- Familiarity with DDEV and Docker-based development environments
- Understanding of GA4, Google Tag Manager and Search Console
- Experience with WooCommerce or ecommerce-adjacent builds
- Comfort using the command line / shell tools
- Experience consuming or working alongside external APIs
- Exposure to modern JS tooling (Node.js, build tools, light React usage, etc.)
WHAT THIS ROLE IS (AND ISN'T)
This role is:
- Platform-focused and long-term
- About reliability, performance and incremental improvement
- A chance to work on WordPress at genuine scale
- Suitable for a confident mid-level developer stepping into greater responsibility
This role is not:
- A junior role with constant supervision
- A purely design-to-build marketing site role
- A senior architecture or people-management position
BENEFITS
- Salary circa £45,000, depending on experience
- 23 days holiday + bank holidays, plus extra Christmas closure
- Flexible working hours with trust and autonomy
- Hybrid working (office presence required)
- Access to major UK and international live events
- Brand-new, fully fitted Fitzrovia office over two floors
