RAN Design Engineer (Nokia & Ericsson)
Location: London or Bristol, three days a week onsite
Duration: 3 months rolling Inside IR35
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced RAN Design Engineer to join our client on a contract basis. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in radio network design and optimization, with hands-on experience in Nokia and Ericsson RAN equipment. This role involves designing, documenting, and validating high-quality RAN solutions that meet both performance and capacity requirements for 4G and 5G networks.
Key Responsibilities
-
Design and plan RAN solutions (LTE/5G NR) using Nokia and Ericsson radio equipment and toolsets.
-
Develop RF design documentation, including network topology, site configuration, frequency plans, and parameter guidelines.
-
Conduct coverage, capacity, and interference analysis using planning tools (eg, Atoll, Planet, Asset, or similar).
-
Produce high-quality design and implementation documents, such as RAN design reports, BoQs, site design templates, and engineering guidelines.
-
Collaborate with RF Optimization, Core, and Transport teams to ensure end-to-end network performance and seamless integration.
-
Support network rollout by reviewing site designs, performing audits, and validating configurations prior to implementation.
-
Contribute to RAN modernization, site upgrades, and new technology introductions (eg, DSS, Massive MIMO, carrier aggregation).
-
Maintain up-to-date documentation libraries and ensure compliance with engineering standards and project governance requirements.
-
Participate in design reviews and provide technical documentation and training to stakeholders as needed.
Required Skills & Experience
-
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
-
5+ years of experience in RAN design and planning, preferably across Nokia and Ericsson equipment.
-
Strong understanding of LTE, 5G NR, and multi-band RAN architecture.
-
Proficiency with radio planning tools (Atoll, Planet, Asset, MapInfo, etc.) and related propagation models.
-
Excellent technical documentation skills - able to create detailed design documents, diagrams, and process guides.
-
Familiarity with Site Design Packages (SDPs), Site Candidate Evaluation, and Design Acceptance processes.
-
Good understanding of RAN parameters, KPIs, and optimization principles.
-
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including Field Engineering, Deployment, and Network Operations.
-
Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
