Head of Data Engineering - Insurtech Unicorn

Are you a hands-on data leader ready to take real ownership of a growing function? Want to help shape the data platform for one of the UK's most exciting Insurtech scale-ups?

We're hiring for a Head of Data Engineering to join a high-growth Insurtech unicorn in London. Backed by top-tier investors and on a mission to transform the insurance space through cutting-edge tech, they're scaling fast and data is at the heart of their product and decision-making.

You'll be stepping into a high-impact leadership position where you'll:

• Take full ownership of the Data Engineering function , currently a talented team of 4

• Set the strategy and vision for how data is ingested, transformed, and leveraged across the business

• Drive the evolution from reactive data workflows to a robust, scalable, productised platform

• Stay 50% hands-on , contributing to the codebase, mentoring the team, and influencing architectural decisions

You'll lead a growing data engineering team made up of:

• 1x Team Lead

• 2x Senior Engineers

• 1x Mid-level Engineer

You'll help shape the team culture, improve engineering practices, and build for long-term scale.

• Is a strong senior/principal-level engineer ready to step into broader leadership and remain hands-on

• Enjoys mentoring and team-building , and is ready to grow into a Head of Function role over the next few years

• Wants to remain technically sharp while playing a strategic role in data platform evolution

• Has experience (or strong interest) in building real-time or event-driven architectures

• Python , SQL

• Snowflake , Postgres

• AWS (S3, ECS, Terraform)

• Airflow , dbt , Docker

• Apache Spark , Iceberg

• Solid experience as a Senior/Lead/Principal Data Engineer, ideally with some line management or mentoring

• Proven ability to design and build scalable data pipelines and infrastructure

• Experience in modern cloud environments (AWS)

• Strong communicator with a cooperative, people-first approach to leadership

• London-based HQ

• Hybrid : 1 day per week on site in London ideally, flexible
