Job summary
As our Digital Clinical Safety Training Lead, you will provide senior clinical, digital and informatics leadership to develop and deliver the GPSU's digital clinical safety training capability.
You will combine expertise as a:
- Digital Clinical Safety subject matter expert
- Clinical educator
- Primary care digital transformation leader
You will design and deliver a comprehensive training programme including:
- Introduction to Digital Clinical Safety training
- Senior leadership and Top Management awareness sessions
- Practitioner-level workshops
- Regional Communities of Practice
You will provide expert guidance on:
- DCB0129 and DCB0160 standards
- Clinical Risk Management
- Supplier assurance
- Hazard identification
- Safety case development
- Safe implementation of digital health technologies
Working closely with GPSU leadership, digital teams, clinical safety experts and regional partners, you will help shape the strategic direction of digital clinical safety across Somerset and the wider system.
Main duties of the job
- Leading the development and delivery of the GPSU Digital Clinical Safety Training Programme.
- Supporting practices, PCNs and partner organisations to understand and apply digital clinical safety principles.
- Developing practical tools, guidance, templates and learning resources.
- Facilitating communities of practice and collaborative learning networks.
- Providing expert advice on clinical risk management and digital technology implementation.
- Supporting the safe deployment of emerging technologies, including AI-enabled solutions and Ambient Voice Technologies.
- Helping build sustainable NHS-owned expertise and reduce reliance on external consultancy.
- Demonstrating the clinical, operational and financial value of digital clinical safety training interventions.
- Acting as an ambassador for safe, ethical and effective use of digital technologies within primary care.

Job responsibilities
Provide strategic clinical, digital and informatics leadership for the GPSU digital clinical safety training capability.
Lead the design, delivery and evaluation of digital clinical safety training for Clinical Safety Officers, Safety Engineers, digital leads, operational leads and Top Management.
Support General Practice and PCNs to understand their responsibilities under DCB0160 when procuring, deploying, maintaining and decommissioning digital health technologies.
Provide expert advice on DCB0129 supplier evidence, clinical risk management, hazard assessment, safety cases and digital governance.
Champion digital clinical safety as an enabler of ethical, safe and effective care.
Support local and regional digital transformation by engaging with General Practice staff, PCNs, provider organisations, commissioners, LMCs, training hubs and regional networks.
Develop a regional Community of Practice to retain and grow NHS-owned digital clinical safety capability.
Contribute to business cases, funding models and service sustainability plans for the GPSU digital clinical safety training offer.Key Responsibilities
Strategic Clinical, Digital and Informatics Leadership
Provide high-quality clinical and informatics leadership across the GPSU digital clinical safety training programme.
Act as an ambassador for safe, ethical and effective digital transformation in General Practice and primary care.
Work with GPSU senior leaders, digital teams and clinical safety colleagues to agree priorities, delivery plans and governance arrangements.
Influence strategic and operational decision-making relating to digital health technologies, clinical risk management and digital safety training
Promote digital clinical safety as a core patient safety discipline rather than a compliance-only activity.
Digital Clinical Safety Training Design and Delivery
Design, develop and deliver a tiered digital clinical safety training offer, including: Introduction to Digital Clinical Safety Top Management awareness sessions Practitioner workshops for CSOs, Safety Engineers and operational leads Community of Practice sessions.
Use practical General Practice and provider-based examples to bring clinical risk management principles to life.
Develop and maintain training materials, exercises, case studies, evaluation forms and pre/post-confidence assessments.
Support learners to apply digital clinical safety principles to live digital health technology deployments.
Evaluate training quality, learner satisfaction and confidence improvement, using feedback to continuously improve the offer.
Clinical Risk Management and Safety Assurance
Provide expert guidance on DCB0129, DCB0160 and the clinical risk management lifecycle.
Support practices, PCNs and partner organisations to understand deployment responsibilities, supplier responsibilities and local governance requirements.
Advise on hazard identification, risk assessment, mitigation planning, safety case development and hazard log maintenance.
Support safe adoption of digital tools including AI-enabled technologies, Ambient Voice Technologies, clinical decision support, patient communication tools and Software as a Medical Device where relevant.
Promote proportionate and practical clinical risk management that reflects the realities of General Practice workload, capacity and operational pressure.
Primary Care Digital Transformation and Informatics
Work with practices and PCNs to support improvement, best practice and safe implementation of digital transformation initiatives.
Enable, promote and support the effective use of data, information, knowledge and technology to improve health and care delivery.
Provide clinical oversight and practical expertise to informatics-enabled change programmes and digital care models.
Support adoption and spread of digital tools by helping stakeholders understand benefits, risks, governance requirements and safe operating models.
Use feedback from staff, patients, incidents, complaints and safety concerns to identify themes, trends and learning relating to digital care models.
Governance, Quality and Patient Safety
Support GPSU governance arrangements for the digital clinical safety training service.
Ensure clinical governance, digital safety and quality issues are appropriately reported, escalated and coordinated.
Support the development of practical governance resources, including: hazard log templates clinical safety case templates DCB0160 deployment checklists supplier DCB0129 review checklists procurement safety checklists Top Management guidance incident and post-deployment monitoring guidance.
Support organisational learning from digital clinical safety incidents, near misses and deployment issues.
Contribute to quarterly reporting on activity, quality, capability, financial value, safety and governance metrics.
Stakeholder Engagement and System Partnership
Build strong working relationships with GP practices, PCNs, LMCs, ICBs, provider organisations, NHS England regional teams, digital networks and training partners.
Represent GPSU at relevant meetings, forums, webinars and communities of practice.
Support collaborative working with CNIOs, CCIOs, Clinical Safety Officers, digital leads, patient safety leads and quality improvement colleagues.
Influence stakeholders across organisational and professional boundaries to support safe digital adoption.
Promote a system-first approach, supporting consistent, high-quality digital clinical safety capability across localities
Community of Practice and Professional Development
Establish and facilitate a Digital Clinical Safety Community of
Practice for trained CSOs, Clinical Safety Specialists, digital leads and operational colleagues.
Provide mentoring, coaching and peer support to individuals developing digital clinical safety responsibilities.
Support GPSU colleagues and partner organisations to build local capability in clinical risk management.
Bring in subject matter experts on specialist topics such as AI, Medical Device Regulations, Software as a Medical Device, supplier assurance and incident learning.
Promote continuing professional development and professional standards in digital health and clinical safety.
Service Development, Evaluation and Sustainability
Support development of the GPSU digital clinical safety training service specification, delivery model and sustainability plan
Contribute to business cases, funding proposals, value propositions and income-generation opportunities.
Monitor demand, training outputs, satisfaction, confidence improvement, cost avoidance and wider service impact.
Produce written reports, briefings and evaluation summaries for GPSU and partner organisations.Contribute to the 12-month evaluation report and recommendations for year two
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Registered health or care professional with current professional registration, for example NMC, GMC, HCPC, GPhC or equivalent.
- Recognised Digital Clinical Safety Officer training or demonstrable equivalent experience in digital clinical safety.
- Evidence of continuing professional development in digital health, clinical safety, informatics, patient safety or primary care transformation.
- Trained by NHS England as part of the Digital Clinical Safety Training: Train-the-Trainer pilot
- Teaching, facilitation, coaching or training qualification or equivalent experience.
- FEDIP registration or willingness to work towards FEDIP Practitioner or Leading Practitioner status.
- Demonstrable quality improvement experience.
Experience
- Experience providing clinical, digital or informatics leadership in primary care, community care, commissioning or provider environments.
- Experience leading change and transformation across organisational, hierarchical and professional boundaries.
- Detailed knowledge of DCB0129, DCB0160 and clinical risk management in the deployment and use of digital health technologies.
- Experience designing, delivering or evaluating training, workshops or learning interventions.
- Experience of working with General Practice, PCNs or primary care digital transformation programmes.
- Experience supporting digital governance, clinical governance, quality improvement or patient safety processes.
