Main duties of the job
- George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a highly motivated, experienced and technically skilled individual to lead its Data Warehouse Team during a period of significant transformation in the organisation's digital and data capabilities.
- The Data Warehouse Manager will be responsible for the design, development, and ongoing management of the Trust's data warehouse and associated data engineering processes. This includes overseeing data architecture, data modelling, and the development of reliable and scalable data pipelines that integrate information from clinical, operational, and corporate systems. These datasets underpin the Trust's internal operational reporting, statutory national returns, and advanced analytics capabilities.
- The post holder will provide leadership to the Data Warehouse Team, supporting the development of staff, prioritising workloads, and ensuring that high standards of technical delivery are maintained. They will be responsible for conducting regular one-to-one meetings, annual appraisals, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence within the team. The role will also ensure that clear standards, documentation, and operating procedures are in place to support the resilience and sustainability of the Trust's data platform.

Job responsibilities
Data Warehousing
- Develop and maintain a robust data warehouse and analytics architecture that integrates data from clinical, operational, and corporate systems and supports scalable storage, transformation, and analysis of healthcare data.
- Lead the design and implementation of robust data ingestion and transformation pipelines (ETL/ELT) to integrate data from a wide range of internal and external systems into the Trusts enterprise data platform.
- Establish and promote data quality standards, validation processes, and monitoring mechanisms to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data held within the Trusts analytics platform.
- Monitor and optimise the performance, scalability, and reliability of the data warehouse and associated data pipelines to ensure efficient data processing and retrieval.
- Work with analysts, reporting teams, and operational stakeholders to understand analytical requirements and develop well-structured data models and curated datasets that support reporting and advanced analytics.
- Ensure comprehensive documentation of data architecture, data pipelines, data models, and metadata, including the maintenance of data dictionaries and technical standards.
- Implement and maintain robust data security and access control mechanisms to protect patient and operational data, ensuring compliance with information governance policies and relevant data protection legislation.
Leadership and Management
- Maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders across the Trust, providing specialist advice and support to ensure that agreed objectives and deliverables are achieved and appropriately documented.
- Work closely with internal Digital Services teams and external technology partners to ensure effective coordination of infrastructure, integration, and platform support for the Trusts data and analytics environment.
- Where required, support organisational investigations and reviews by providing specialist data analysis, interpretation, and technical advice
- Liaise with third-party system vendors and technology partners to support the effective implementation, integration, and ongoing operation of data platform technologies.
Strategic Contribution
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the Trusts data and analytics strategy, ensuring that the data warehouse and analytics platform evolve to meet organisational needs.
- Provide technical leadership and advice on the design and adoption of modern data platform technologies and data engineering practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve the Trusts use of data through better integration, modelling, and accessibility of datasets to support operational improvement and patient care.
Technical and Platform Leadership
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to the Data Warehouse Team, ensuring adoption of best practices in data engineering, data modelling, and platform management.
- Oversee the selection, implementation, and optimisation of data platform tools and technologies, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and fit for purpose.
- Maintain awareness of emerging tools, techniques, and industry trends, advising the team and wider organisation on opportunities to enhance the Trusts data and analytics capabilities.
- Promote consistency, quality, and maintainability across data pipelines, datasets, and analytics solutions, ensuring alignment with organisational data strategy.

Person Specification
Data warehousing
- Extensive familiarity with complex computerised information systems
- Integrated dashboard scope, design, and development.
- Proven ability to lead, influence and motivate with project / resource planning experience.
- Experience of designing, coding, testing and implementation of efficient and robust database schemas.
- Extensive experience of SQL Database Administrator tools and utilities including advanced scripting and basic coding.
- A Masters' degree or equivalent relevant experience to achieve expert status in the use of modern analytics platforms.
- Knowledge of the information needs and processes of the Clinical and Operational functions within an Acute hospital.
- Experience designing and managing modern data pipelines (ETL/ELT), curated datasets, and semantic layers.
- Experience managing technical teams of developers or data engineers, including mentoring, prioritisation, and professional development.
