Head of Data & AI

We are working with a mission-driven humanitarian aid organisation to find a Head of Data & AI to play a key role in embedding evidence-based decision-making and unlocking insight across the organisation. This newly created role will lead data and AI strategy, driving innovation, operational excellence, and the ethical use of emerging technologies to deliver measurable impact.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a full audit of data landscapes and define standards to improve quality, compliance, access, and efficiency
  • Establish and enforce data governance, ensuring GDPR compliance, ethical use, and executive reporting
  • Define current and future data architecture focused on secure, scalable, value-driven outcomes
  • Lead data integration, standardisation, and remediation of legacy data issues
  • Oversee delivery of data and analytics initiatives, balancing quick wins with long-term transformation
  • Develop and deliver an AI roadmap focused on impact, efficiency, and engagement
  • Embed AI into governance frameworks with strong controls and responsible scaling
  • Advise executives and trustees on data and AI, building buy-in through clear outcomes
  • Chair the Data Governance Committee and oversee cross-organisational data and AI delivery

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Senior leadership experience in data, analytics, AI, or machine learning
  • Proven delivery of large-scale data and AI programmes with measurable impact
  • Experience building and scaling data functions, including teams and external partners
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into clear business value
  • Experience unifying and standardising complex, organically grown data environments
  • Strong technical oversight of data platforms (integration, warehousing/lakehouse, BI, cloud—preferably Microsoft stack)
  • Strong knowledge of data governance, privacy, and regulatory requirements
  • Proven change leadership driving adoption of data and AI across complex organisations
  • Strong programme and project leadership across matrix teams and suppliers

Desirable

  • Experience in international humanitarian, not-for-profit, or Middle East contexts
  • Understanding of humanitarian data ethics and working with vulnerable populations
